Spitzer’s DMV policy echoes Spano bill

Posted by: Glenn Blain - Posted in Eliot Spitzer, immigration, Nick Spano on Oct 03, 2007

One Republican who is not critical of Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s move to let illegal immigrants have driver’s licenses is former state Sen. Nick Spano of Yonkers.

As Azi at “The Politicker”:http://www.observer.com/2007/spitzers-license-plan-has-gop-roots noted today, Spano introduced a bill in the Senate in 2006 that would also have allowed illegal immigrants to obtain driver’s licenses.

But Spano, in telephone interview with Politics on the Hudson, said his measure avoided some of the security concerns raised by critics of Spitzer’s move by creating a new type of license only for undocumented aliens. That new license, according to the former senator, would have allowed them to operate a non-commercial vehicle but could not have been acceptable as a form of identification.

“In my opinion, we have many people who live in our state but who are not here legally and want to be able to work for a living,” Spano said. “We should be able to give them the opportunity to do just that and not force them to drive without licenses.”

Spano said he introduced the legislation after discussing the issue with local immigrant advocates. The bill died in committee.

“I think what the governor did was take an issue that is a serious one and put it out on the front burner, and that’s a good thing,” Spano said. “Now we just need to handle the technical aspects, so that we don’t harm average New Yorkers.”

Along with Zehy Jereis, it is assinine
things like this which kept many Republicans
from voting for Nick Spano last time.

Not that they voted for Cousins, they
just stayed home. Or maybe they just
went to the polls only to vote AGAINST
    John Spencer.

The state should be held accountable for any harm to citizens in this country harmed by a ILLEGAL immigrant. If he is visiting California(or any state in this country), as a American Citizen I will suit New York State if after investigation, it is found the person who caused me harm was ILLEGAL!!!
Mexico need to spend its money on its citizens, not our USA politicians!!

Sorry to disagree with you Ethan but its not assinine-Senator Spano has a valid point-when someone drives without a license and is not insured we pay the price in higher insurance costs. Whether they are legal or not. Licensing them makes sense.

Governor Eliot Spitzer is right, and he is a hero!

Those bandit and scoundrel republicans are dividing our society with scare tactics. They are trying to make our country hatemonger’s country. We welcome immigrants and their contribution to our society. The Americans who claim not to have jobs and complaining are the lazy scum of our society; we are hard working proud Americans who are not afraid to help the poor and make our society a welcoming society. Governor Eliot Spitzer is a real American whom our forefathers should be proud of. I pray to God he prevails, in which case he already did. For those of you, hateful dirt(s), go join the KKK, live in a trailer somewhere in the South in remote swaps, marry your closest, and do yourself a favor; don’t pollute our welcoming state and our country with your hate speeches. After all is it not a republican who was preying on young boy interns, and the other who took his family value straight to the rest room looking for perverts at least that was told. We are God fearing good and clean Americans, not thieves and perverts. Spitzer is right, let the poor dream as well.

Thank you, may God bless Spitzer and our country; may God give your hateful heart the scent of worship and care. And when I say worship is not worshipping the hateful rep., the overweight and ugly Congressman James Sensenbrenner, whose cholesterol level still out scores his ego and hatred. Why don’t he focus on his health and eating habits rather than scaring Americans with his inflated fear tactics, back room politics and poisons bills; he might as well go and work for groups like the K.K.K. We are a welcoming nation; we feed the poor; we pray to God; we love and respect our family, neighbors and God’s creatures. Why don’t we listen to star citizens such as the priests who devoted their lives for the good of men and God; who are telling us to be kind, why do we follow a no good liar republican politician?

It simply beats logic away. Go Spitzer and alike, enough of these lies.

No more voting republican for me.

    Governor or Pope!

We have criminals in this country boldly going where no criminals have gone before. Right out there in front of the Main Stream Media.

It is long over due that we report these acts of aiding and abetting. It could just be the trigger that the police need to act.

Many police departments, sheriffs departments, prosecuting attorneys and other law enforcement agency’s can now be contacted online.

Many in law enforcement feel the same as we do about this illegal invasion.

    Federal Immigration and Nationality Act
    Section 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii)

“Any person who . . . encourages or induces an alien to . . . reside . . . knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that such . . . residence is . . . in violation of law, shall be punished as provided . . . for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs . . . fined under title 18 . . . imprisoned not more than 5 years, or both.”
Section 274 felonies under the federal Immigration and Nationality Act, INA 274A(a)(1)(A):
A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:

    • assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or
    • encourages that alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way, or
    • knowingly assists illegal aliens due to personal convictions.

Nick Spano only proposed that bill to come across
as “Mr. Extremely Moderate” in his race against
Cousins. Put another way, he pandered.

His bill died a well-deserved death.

Ethan sorry to tell you that you are wrong-Senator Spano proposed a good bill that would help New Yorkers not have to pay for uninsured motorists-thats not pandering its good solid leadership something that we lost when Cousins took office.

Seriously, is not being licensed the only reason for hit and runs and the shooting of traffic enforcement officers?

    http://www.immigrationshumancost.org/text/crimevictims.html

    CRIME VICTIMS OF ILLEGAL ALIENS

There is an enormous number of Americans who have been harmed by the criminals who pass through the nation’s open borders. For that reason, this section can only provide a symbolic tribute to the many unnamed victims who have been killed, raped, robbed, crippled and otherwise personally violated.

I really don’t understand the connection between having a license and having insurance. I am a resident of New York City, and most legal citizens have drivers license but no insurance, as we don’t drive on any regular basis. Approximately half of New York State’s population is concentrated in New York City.

Spano knew his bill would die in committee. That was just another Nick dog and pony show. But, once again he’s chiming in on this issue since Glenn Blain has his number of speed dial and constantly gives him a place to shoot off at the mouth. The governor’s bill isn’t very smart either. People who have been driving without licenses or insurance for years are less likely to make it legal for fear of deportation raids. From a practical stand point, I don’t see the logic in Spitzer’s bill either.
