Support for Spitzer’s DMV proposal

October
3

Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of The New York Immigration Coalition, issued a statement this afternoon expressing support for Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan to allow illegal immigrants access to state driver’s licenses.

The statement also blasts Assembly Republicns, who held a forum/press conference in Lower Manhattan this morning to criticize thge plan, for misleading the public and playing upon people’s fears.

“Unfortunately, we’re seeing a sad failure of leadership on the part of elected officials like State Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno and State Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco,” Hong said in the statement. “They are squandering an opportunity to forge bipartisan unity around real security improvements. They may be having a field day coming up with their ‘Osama drinking champagne’ quips, but their irresponsible rhetoric and hypocrisy come with a real price—distorting the security issues at stake.

“The new DMV policy presents a rare bipartisan opportunity to unite all New Yorkers around a serious effort to improve public safety and homeland security and bring immigrants out of the shadows and into the system. Our elected officials need to stop their political games and support this policy, which benefits all New Yorkers.”

What a shock that is! An immigration coalition
backing Spitzer’s plan to give licenses to illegals.

Next, there will be an item reporting rain is wet.
