Clinton would end pregnancy discrimination
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton said today she expects to “have 100 percent support from the Republicans’’ on a proposed federal law to ban employers from firing workers because they are pregnant.
At a YWCA in Manchester, N.H., Clinton laid out an presidential campaign agenda for balancing work and family that includes expansion of the federal Family and Medical Leave Act to cover an addition 13 million workers by including companies that have 25-50 employees. The current law covers only employers with 50 or more workers.
Clinton also said she is a co-sponsor of a Senate bill that would require employers provide at least seven paid days of sick leave annually.
Her other proposals:
—Increase funding the federal Child Care and Development Block Grant, expanding eligibility to stay-at-home parents.
—Spend $1 billion annually on a new Family Leave Innovation Fund for grants to states to help them establish parental leave programs. States could decide to pay for at-home infant care, offer tax credits, or expand their temporary disability insurance or unemployment insurance programs.
—Provide paid parental leave to all federal workers.
