Drivers’ License Mailer

No stranger to hard-charging mailers, Monroe County GOP boss Stephen Minarik has this one going out against Democratic candidates for the county legislature and has garnered attention around the state because it shows how the drivers’ license issue is fueling debate in local races.

The county legislature voted last month 20-9 to oppose Gov. Spitzer’s plan to offer drivers’ licenses to illegal immigrants with three Democratic lawmakers in competitive races—Ted O’Brien, Stephanie Aldersley and Steve Eckel—voting with the Republicans.

Still, Minarik, former state GOP chairman, said this morning that Democrats in the legislature by and large supported Spitzer’s plan, and that’s the intent of the mailing—which is drawing jeers from Democrats and local Muslims.

Minarik said the issue “has some weight. It’s like a saga, every day something new comes out.”

In Dutchess County, Democrats are crying foul over a mailing that links Democrats in the county legislature to Spitzer’s plan—even though most Democrats on the legislature voted against the policy. The county is facing a tight battle over control of the legislature, which Republicans control by just one seat.

“The Republicans have used this to distract from the local issues going on in counties and our towns,” said Joseph Ruggiero, the county’s Democratic chairman who is also running for county executive.

Good job by Minarik. With about 75 percent
of NY citizens opposed to Spitzer and
now Hillary on this licenses fiasco, it’s
time to keep hitting them, and to keep hitting them hard.

I see your point. But your mailer is offensive…and dare I say…It’s a repubican president who allowed all of the illegals in. Your argument is quite contradictory…and offensive.

  3. Ethan Edwards

    Dear David,

When you stop swinging from the left side
of the plate, let everyone know.

Both parties are responsible for the illegals
craziness, but it is Spitzer in NYS and
the unprincipled robot Hillary Clinton who
are front and center at this time.

  4. David

    Dear Ethan,
At this time? Are you kidding me? Spitzer’s plan was at best ill advised and down right stupid. But, Spitzer nor Hillary are responsible for creating it. We can’t discuss homeland security while our porous boards are wide open. But, no one else is offering a solution. Are you?

  5. David

And another thing…It’s just disingenuous for republicans to politicize the issue…when you don’t have a solution

“Good job by Minarik.” -even though it’s basically lying about the Democrats who do NOT support Spitzer’s plan? Well, I guess if you don’t have any actual issues or proposals to run on, might as well just outright LIE.

I thought the GOP was the party of “family values.” I don’t know about you, Ethan, but in my family, we don’t value lying.

Now, Walter….You know I stand for “Truth,
Justice, and the American Way.” And as
regards family values, look at all the trouble
I went through to rescue my niece from those
renegade Indians and their vicious leader, Scar.

The republicans are exposing the democrats for what they are at election time. I have received several milers in the last couple of days regarding Governor Spitzers idea of giving illegal immigrants drivers licenses and the NYS Assembly and Senate Republican committee are doing there job letting voters know where the democrats stand on this issue. Good pre-election information, let the voters know where the leaders of the parties stand.
