New Rochelle’s District 4 still a nail-biter

All eyes are on the race for City Council District 4 in New Rochelle, where Democratic Councilman Roberto Lopez is in close to a dead heat with Republican challenger Richard St. Paul.
The latest unofficial tallies posted this morning by the Westchester County Board of Elections show St. Paul ahead by seven votes, with the tally at 581-574. All machine votes have been counted, along with 22 absentee ballots received so far.
The outcome could be decided by affidavit ballots, which are filled out by voters whose names for some reason are not included on the rolls, and by last-minute absentee ballots. The Board of Elections continues to accept absentee votes postmarked by Monday for seven days. Election officials did not know how many affidavit ballots had been filled out; they determine later whether the ballots are valid.
The outcome of that race appears key to determining whether the Republicans now control two or three seats on the seven-member council. The other Republican victors are businessman Louis Trangucci in District 1 and Albert Tarantino in District 2, both in the south end of the city.
