Stewart-Cousins ad campaign halted

November
13

The state GOP is halting its ad campaign against state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins because the senator’s husband is seriously ill.

State GOP spokesman Matt Walter said the party was not aware of Tom Cousins’ condition when they began airing the 30 second spots. The first of the ads appeared on local cable channels yesterday.

“It’s not a time for politics,” Walter said. “We wish him well and hope for a speedy recovery.”

The state GOP was apparantly notified of Tom Cousins’ conditition by former state Sen. Nick Spano, who called Republican leaders this afternoon to ask that they halt the ads.

“I understand this is a sensitive time and the senator should be focused on her family issues,” Spano said in an e-mail to Politics on the Hudson.

Tom Staudter, a spokesman for Stewart-Cousins, said the senator’s husband had a kidney removed and has been hospitalized for the past several weeks at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. His recovery has been slow, Staudter added.

“Sen. Stewart-Cousins is grateful for this action by the state GOP and appreciates their heartfelt concern,” Staudter said.

While I agree with the ads-my heartfelt best wishes go to the Cousins family-Senator Spano is correct the focus should be on Tom Cousins speedy recovery-best to all

  2. Timing

Timing is everything, what some said was a bad GOP ad has now turned around and given the GOP the ability to pull the ad and look good. Nick Spano looks good for his compassion by calling the state GOP and the state GOP looks good by pulling the ad. The GOP gets great positive PR while extending concern for the husband of a Senator.

Politics with class huh? Judging from your close association with Ernie Davis, you know nothing about class. I can’t wait for the day that you stop further embarrassing Mount Vernon with your illegitimate “pro-bono” representation of the mayor’s office and your silly, nonsensical speeches and comments. You, sir, are the nuclear weapon of buffoonery.
