Yonkers city government prepares for Pope

November
13

The news yesterday that Pope Benedict will make a stop in Yonkers this spring prompted the question: Did city officials know this was in the works, and what are they doing to prepare? The mayor’s spokesman, David Simpson, could not be reached for comment yesterday due to the Veterans Day holiday, but emailed this statement to reporter Ernie Garcia today:

“The administration was notified about the possibility of a papal visit about two months ago when the US Secret Service contacted the YPD to begin planning for the necessary security arrangements. Obviously, we will not be discussing those arrangements in any detail.  To this point, that has been the extent of our preparations, which is to say they have been limited solely to a security nature.

As you know, Pope Benedict’s (I think that’s the first time I’ve written his name) public appearances are being handled by the Vatican and the Archdiocese.  I suspect we will have very little input whatsoever. However, we will be prepared to offer support in any way that we can to the extent that we are asked.

I should add that Mayor Amicone is very excited about Benedict’s visit.  Not only is he thrilled about the exposure it will create for the City of Yonkers and St. Joseph’s Seminary on a grand stage, but as a practicing Catholic he is personally elated about the possibility of receiving mass from the leader of the Catholic Church.”

Why did they keep this quiet until after the elections? Is it true that Amicone is moving the City Seat to Rome, and is conspiring with local builders to raze St. Peter’s, the Colosseum, and other old and outdated buildings in order to erect tax-abated luxury towers with office space? Huh? Any truth to this?

Simpson should learn that no one “receives” Mass.
Catholics attend Mass, they don’t receive it. They
    do receive Communion.

Rome? Where the Emperor Cesar Augustus was. I’ll
    leave that one alone today.

gee my wife and I loved Rome..London used to be
my favorite city but then we went to Italy
every time you bump into a building
its 2000 YEARS old and looks like it was
    built yesterday..meanwhile..the Tappan Zee is
    falling into the river

I have a question for “Ethan Edwardsâ€? who seems to be an expert on all things Catholic these days…

...if His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI and Dr. Giulio Cavallo were to meet on this trip, who would kiss whose ring?

  5. Ethan Edwards

The Consultant thinks he’s Gregory Peck with Audrey
Hepburn or something like that. But that’s alright, his
comment on the Zee Bridge was very good.

The smart-a.. comment by anonymous won’t get an answer.
    It doesn’t deserve one.

Nothing on The Emporer Cesar Augustus today? Oh well.

If Malcolm X started a law firm with Pope Benedict, would the firm be called: ” X, Benedict?”
