Giuliani goes the Reagan route
Unlike Rudy Giuliani’s previous television ads, which focused heavily on his days as New York City mayor, a new commercial being shown in New Hampshire deals with the issue of Islamic terrorism and features a not-so-subtle mention of Ronald Reagan.
In the ad, Giuliani talks about the Iranian hostage crisis of the late 1970’s and the eventual release of the hostages on the day Reagan took office.
“And they released the American hostages in one hour, and that should tell us a lot about these Islamic terrorists that we’re facing,.” Giuliani says in the ad. “The one hour in which they released them was the one hour in which Ronald Reagan was taking the Oath of Office as president of the United States. The best way you deal with dictators, the best way you deal with tyrants and terrorists, you stand up to them. You don’t back down. I’m Rudy Giuliani and I approve this message.â€?

Rudy has no choice but to do commercials as this. His poll numbers reflect this. Rudy troops continue to flock into NH to help him show face, as he is looking for respectful numbers.
Social Conservatives CLEARLY are sending word in the early States to final on one candidate. I belive as many, that Social Conservatives will “sit at home at a minimum of six States… Thus easily costing the National GOP for sure the election…In fact two GOP Operatives have stated this concern to me just about a week ago.
On another matter, Two GOP camps I have contact with report changes in their polls in just the last week or so. (Actual both sides Dem & GOP show changes) and so I concur with recent reports of the recent Clinton decline and the further decline of Rudy support in the early states.
That said, RTL’s, ACU & 2A’s are working their butts off and continue the rally cry and threat to the GOP to somehow and someway remove the field and crown ONE Conservative where all can rally behind for remaining State primaries.
Does this work out for sure? I won’t answer that yet.
Mean while I continue involvement in the 20th CD and the problems in that arena.
Rudy shouldn’t compare himself to Reagan. For one thing, Reagan was at least likeable, with a charming personality. I guess he forgot all about Iran-Contra, too? Maybe he thinks that selling arms to the Iranians to fund illegal aid to the Contras can be considered standing up to tyrants and terrorists?
Some say that Reagan engineered the release of the hostages, timed to prevent Carter from benefiting in the election from an earlier release. Nothing has ever been proven about this either way, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were true.
Rudy is heading to disaster in the early states. Poll numbers are reflecting this.
Jim Kelly
I love the conservative dogman on Rudy..they simply can’t stand the fact that Conservative Republicans are no
longer monolithic..that even evangelicals are split
along social issues such as the environment..it isn’t
all just about abortion any more..its about the economy
its about keeping the US safe and fighting terrorism,
and its about who can beat Hillary…If for a moment
you think that a guy like MIke Huckabee who is leading
in Iowa and who is a creationist, who also let a convicted
rapist out of jail so he could rape again, could possilbly
win a national election you are sorely mistaken…Ronald
Reagan will go down as one of the great presidents of
the 20th century for many reasons..but his social
conservatism is not going to be one of them….he talked
a great game but at heart he was a live and let live kind
of guy…left over from his union days in the movie
business in california. If the Republican Party does not
want to become a permanent minority party with no
ability to attract moderate democrats and independents
all it has to do is follow the recommendations of
guys like Jim Kelly….But for as many people as Jim
says will stay home if Rudy is nominated..just as
many will stay home if Huckabee, or Thompson is nominated
and as for Mitt, if you think this guy is a true conservative you better review his statements while
governor of california..and we all know that southern
baptists and other protestant groups view mormans
as a cult relgion..Funny but when his dad ran for
Preident the issue wasn’t raised..As George Will said
the other day we may have been more religiously enlightened
in terms of the litmus tests imposed upon candidates
in the 1960’s than we are now..so Jim are there more
of you …or more of me in this nation…are there
more hardline conservatives or more centrist
voters…I am willing to bet on the latter…even
in the republican party and certainly among
independents…
oh and just one more observation….the Giuliani
strategy is for Hukabee to make Romney look weak in
Iowa…for New Hampshire to not matter…for SOuth
Carolina to be a Thompson state…and then Rudy
rolls in fla, nj, cal, mich, etc…thats how he
gets the nomination
rudy – spano team!!!!!ring the bell for round three!!!! ding! ding! i’m ready!
I am with you LOU!
For those who missed this earlier wisdom:
Kevin Davis, writing on the other posting, has a very good and cogent point (concerning Richardson), which all here should remember.
It was just four years ago, but can anyone recall that Gov./Dr. Dean was indeed not only the Dem frontrunnerâ€â€but the leading money raiser and media darling? How quickly that evaporated.
In late 1991, Gov. Cuomo, Hamlet of the Hudson, was in fact the front-runner for the Dem presidential nomination. Clinton wasn’t yet a factor. The late Paul Tsongas was ahead of Clinton in many polls.
In late 1975, few among the informed guessed that a former one-term governor of Georgia would capture the 1976 Dem nomination, much less become president. Jerry Brown and Frank Church kept it close in an exciting primary season, while RWR was battling Ford, nearly to success (in the closest convention vote in modern history).
And, in early 1980, before New Hampshire, former Texas governor John Connally was presumed to be the GOP nominee against Carterâ€â€again, Connally was the darling of the moneyed crowd, and of a lot of the news media. Ford was considered then, as Al Gore is today, to be the former executive for whom the nomination would have been his for the asking.
In 1960, many Democrats believed Adlai Stevenson would earn a third shot at the presidency, before Joseph Kennedy’s spending splurge, and Bobby Kennedy’s immaculate campaign management, thrust JFK over Lyndon Johnson, Stevenson, and a field of qualified others, including Hubert Humphrey.
You can take this yield back to 1952, when Sen. Robert Taft was favored over Gen. Eisenhower, until the powers within the Republican Party (and George Galllup himself) tilted the pre-primary system toward Ike.
Here’s a suggestion, for fun: go get the late Fletcher Knebel’s “Dark Horseâ€?â€â€one of the finest political novels ever writtenâ€â€- and enjoy the coming political season.
Above comment…..oh and just one more observation….the Giuliani strategy is for Hukabee to make Romney look weak in
Iowa…for New Hampshire to not matter…for South
Carolina to be a Thompson state…and then Rudy
rolls in fla, nj, cal, mich, etc…thats how he
gets the nomination….
I Agree with the above comment, as the whole nation knows this already & TV continues to advise this…..
The ideas of the other camps is how to stop this to play out. That is a fun challenge as a consultant of one of the other camps. That is the sport of the profession.
Thank you Jim Kelly. We can only wish that our presidential campaigns could be more fair, and that candidates didn’t have to rob banks (and promise our future) in order to be elected. That’s naive of me, of course; in the end it’s going to be Hillary vs. Rudy, regardless. What a war that will be! Voters will be grateful when it’s over, although al Queda will want it go on forever.
