A Web site launched Wednesday by the state Attorney General’s Office offers the public a new way to review campaign contributions, state contracts, legislation and other databases in New York.
The new site, www.sunlightny.com, allows users to track bills before the state Legislature, review state spending by legislators in their districts and track lobbyists’ contracts.
The site was slated to go live by 3 p.m.
By linking seven massive state databases â€â€Å“ such as campaign finance reports and registered not-for-profit agencies â€â€Å“ the public can better view how state government operates, said Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
For instance, the public can enter legislators’ names and review bills they are sponsoring, who have contributed to their election campaigns and to what agencies they have allocated state aid, called member items.
The Web site is part of Cuomo’s Project Sunlight initiative that he outlined during his campaign for attorney general last year. He hired long-time state government watchdog leader Blair Horner to lead the effort.
Cuomo said the effort will make state government more accountable to New Yorkers.
