Show Me The Money!

Posted by: Joseph Spector - Posted in 2007, Albany, courts, state legislature, Uncategorized on Dec 14, 2007

Sen. Eric Adams, a freshman senator for Brooklyn, is all the talk today over his best Jerry Maguire impression during yesterday’s debate on the Senate floor over pay raises for judges.

e said not only do judges deserve a pay raise, but so do legislators, who make a base salary of $79,500.

“I don’t know how some of you are living to tell you the truth,” he said. “With $79,000 you qualify for public assistance…This is a joke. Our staff isn’t being paid enough, we’re not being paid enough and we’re allowing people to tell us that we should not look for a raise increase.”

Then he went into this:”I deserve a raise. I deserve to be paid more. Show me the money! Show me the money! That’s what it’s all about. We deserve more money. We deserve to be paid for the job we’re doing.”

Here’s the full clip, being circulated today by state Republicans. You think this clip will reappear next year as Republicans try to retain control of the Senate?

Wish I made $79K a year. The Federal Poverty Level for a family of 3 is around $15,000, and I believe to qualify for Welfare, you have to make around half that. Not sure how that adds up to $79K. Maybe it’s the new math? What a doofus…

This is for a part-time job, and doesn’t include perks, health-insurance, and pension payments. If this guy doesn’t prove they’re loaded with arrogant fruitcakes up there in Albany, nothing does.

Sen. Adams has really got a set getting up there and speaking his true feelings. Most people will disagree with him but that’s what makes him all the more courageous.

If we had more honest men and women in Albany like him our state would be much better off.

Goes to show you that every absurdity finds a champion.

  5. blah blah

Ok, a base salary of $79,500 plus what? Are there any stipends included in there? Does he pay for his own travel, or is it re-imbursed? How many days a year does he actually spend in Albany working, not including time spent feeding at the trough of lobbyists at fundraisers? What are the taxpayers getting for our $79,500+ from Senator Adams?

  6. ba ba boom

    79,500 my foot.

there’s not one assemblyman or senator (aside from mike cole who was punished for intern related trouble) who makes the base salary. even freshman republican assemblyman and democratic senators make at least an additional 10,000, often more, for committee assignments plus roughly 500 p/week (approx. 26 weeks) in travel, meal and lodging re-imbursements even though a majority of legislators use vehicles from the state fleet to travel to and from albany and around their districts. not to mention the world-class healthcare, at an estimated cost of 35,000 for each legislator.

so add that all up, and the real base salary is closer to 102,500 and that’s just for the low men on the todempole. most others easily make much, much more than that for roughly 120 days of work.

give the judges what they deserve, they don’t get “leadership” and “travel” stipends. legislative and judicial pay needs to be seperated. and any legislative pay raises should be voted on by the people.

  7. Stupidity on Display

So who’s dumber? Eric Adams or Ba Ba Boom. They’re both wrong.

Adams has been there 20 minutes and doesn’t like his pay. Tough darts. But he goes showtime and gets attention.

But Ba Ba Boom is wrong too. The new members – up to 8 years in – in the Assembly Majority get no committee stipends or LuLus. They do get reimbursed for their travel to Albany – but that’s hardly added salary. Dollar Bill Ryan has $89K and wants $124 K…nothing’s fair.

This is the trouble with blogs…anybody can say anything, whether they know what they’re talking about or not. The biggest mouths – i.e. “Jerry Maguire” get all the attention in office and the ones who are actually working decently get scooped up with the dummies.

But of course, only outrage makes headlines – the dummy politicians and the dummy citizens. The good guys, in both categories, are I G N O R E D…

No LuLus? How do you define lulus? Free, taxpayer- paid meals? Free transportation? Health care beyond the wildest dreams of the average joe? Part-time job at full-time wages? Outrageous pension program? Outside employment as, in effect, lobbying for special interests at a price, against the public interest? And many, many more. If you don’t want to call them lulus, find another name; maybe ’ organized, penalty-free crime.’
