$19 million in public funds for seven presidential campaigns

December
20

Seven presidential candidates, including U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, an anti-war Democrat from Ohio, are eligible for public financing for their campaigns, the Center for Responsive Politics reports.

The Federal Election Commission announced this week it has certified $19.3 million in federal matching funds for seven campaigns. Democrat John Edwards is eligible to receive the most at $8.8 million. Republican John McCain follows with $5.8 million. Democrats Joe Biden and Christopher Dodd and Republicans Tom Tancredo and Duncan Hunter are also eligible for funding.

In exchange for a cash infusion from the U.S. Treasury, candidates may not spend more than $50 million on their campaign and must abide by spending limits in each state.
