Not so quick on the draw

Politicians love to announce the goodies their communities receive — especially politicians who are in Iowa to stoke up support for a presidential bid — but Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-NY, was a little late this time.
Actually, more than a month late.
A press release just came from her office announcing that the Federal Emergency Management Agency had granted $1,568,442.75 to New Rochelle to repair Skidelsky Memorial Field, an artificial turf field that was damaged in the Nor’easter last April.
â€Å“This is great news for the City of New Rochelle and for the area’s residents who visit City Park to use the field,â€? Clinton said in the release.
Indeed. It was such great news that U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey, D-Harrison, announced the same grant back on Nov. 30.
Lowey, in her release, said; â€Å“I am pleased that the federal government has responded to this need in New Rochelle, and I will continue working to help New York recover and develop long-term strategies that will reduce risk in the future.â€?
The money is being combined with $500,000 in state money to repair the field.
Either way, New Rochelle parks chief William Zimmermann was grateful for money when asked about it a couple of weeks ago. His department had managed to repair the field temporarily, but he said it definitely needs a replacement.
Notwithstanding the historic deluge that damaged the field, it had been holding up well under heavy use, Zimmermann said.
“For the kind of use that this field gets, it’s been a wonderful thing for us,” he said then.
