You just don’t understand

Posted by: Liz Anderson - Posted in 2008, Bill Ryan, Michael Kaplowitz, Westchester Board of Legislators, Westchester County on Jan 08, 2008

As predicted, Westchester County Board of Legislators Chairman William Ryan was re-elected to a third term last night, and Michael Kaplowitz, D-Somers, became vice chairman in a largely party-line vote.

In his speech, Ryan brushed by recent controversy over a package of proposed raises and renewed his call for more of a public outreach effort to educate people about what the board does. It was, I’m guessing, a repeat of the sort of comments he made two years ago after the last dust-up over proposed pay hikes.

According to Jorge Fitz-Gibbon’s story, Ryan said county residents need to know what the legislators do to earn their keep – $49,200 in base pay plus stipends for board and committee leadership posts.

“We understand there are those who really do not know what county government does,” Ryan told a packed county board meeting room. “Unfortunately, there are people who will not acknowledge what we do and how necessary our work really is.”

The newly elected board is overseeing a significant reconstruction and reconfiguaration of the eighth floor offices for the board members. As far as I can tell, there has been no public disclosure of the cost.

I hear that the size of the offices for Legislators Maisano & Burrows were cut in half because they spoke our strongly against the pay increase. I also hear that the only Republican that did not have her office size reduced was Bernice Spreckman of Yonkers. This is the same Spreckman that was the only Republican to support Bill Ryan last night for re-election for chair and was the only Republican that voted with the Democrats on most of the contested votes over the past two years (and the same Bernice Spreckman who has her son and sister on Andy Spano’s payroll.) Her office is bigger than Minority Leader George Oros. There really are only 3 Republicans left on county legislature (Oros, Maisano & Burrows), which is a sad reality for Westchester taxpayers.

the lack of republican seats on the board can be blamed squarely on oros. he put his personal politics ahead of progress for the gop. he blocked astorino from running in district 3 which, as predicted, was lost the the democrats. he also put no work into district 4 which was also lost to democrats. the republicans made a bad move by keeping him as minority leader. he doesn’t know what he’s doing and his time has long passed.

The sky is falling! Even Spitzer is now alluding to the uselessness and ridiculous, duplicative expense to the taxpayers of county governments.

I think Well has his info all mixed up. It is not Oros, the Minority leader that is to get other repub’s elected, it is the County Republican Leader (GOP LEADER). That would be Colety who took over recently from Panio.

Get your facts straight. Oros has worked very hard as legislator for his district and as the minority leader for the county Repub caucus. Check his voting record and many attempts at new legislation,(ie limiting where reg sex offenders can live – child care and county run facility areas) which the dem majority has blocked or refused to allow on the floor.

And Ed is right, there is too much duplication of services in County Govt. And the dems keep spending away..
Let’s go back to the board of supervisors, take a look next door at Connecticut – without any County Govt and see how much less their residents are paying.
And their Social Services are still being provided,
And their roads are still paved,
And their bridges are still spanning the rivers.

And I can’t even move there because our property values here have tumbled so low, while our taxes have skyrocketed.

I think Well has it all wrong. Oros is not responsible for any Republican losses. Tom has hit it on the head. The whole Republican Party needs a leader!!!!. Even if Astorino ran, the outcome would be the same. Look at the District. Even the Republicans lost in Harrison. So Well, wake up and smell the coffee. If Astorino like the job he would of stayed, instead of using it as a stepping stone. The Republicans better wake up!!! We have now come full circle,
lets turn it around, now and groom candidates for office and raise money. Instead of saying poor us.
