Quick: name the last "crime-fighting" and "anti-terrorism" presidential candidate to be elected. (Ans. below)

Mayor G has somewhat "flamed" since last Fall, owing most likely to his refusal to accept the advice of his more rational, albeit opportunistic, staff. Sad. But I can remember when he blew off 200 upstate dedicated gray-haired Republican women, in April 2000, after they'd organized a huge campaign rally for him, only so he could get to Yankee Stadium for Opening Day, which was delayed by a snowstorm. In poker, that's a "tell" to someone's motives and essence.

Okay: Tom Dewey failed, in 1944 and 1948, against two different opponents, to win election as a crimefighter. You can't count Estes Kefauver as a crimefighter, but he lost, too. Barry Goldwater and George Wallace failed in their runs as "anti-communist" ("terrorists" in today's lingo) candidates.

Ans.: Richard Nixon was the last candidate to successfully use crimefighting and fear of communism/terrorism in winning the presidency. And he won only due to Wallace's siphoning away traditional Dem votes from Hubert in the Old South. Comparisons between RMN and Rudy are welcome, but I think the similarities end with their law degrees.

This election year should be fun for at least three more weeks.

The Republican Leadership deserves all that is coming to them. They have been forewarned last summer of these results that are coming. A New York City GOP Liberal (In the eyes of true Americans) cannot win in this nation.

Egg on their face again. BTW...There is No Republican Party in NY State.

Many GOP Chairs are already delegates for other Presidential Candidates - as early as the fall they were lining up. Thus a split was already in the works in the NY State GOP Party.

the republican nominee may or may not be John Mc Cain
but it is over for Rudy Giuliani....If you are not winning
in the state that you claim as home you are done...
Giuliani's demeanor, his foreign policy credentials
his constant reference to 9/11, his lack of economic
understanding and insistance on tax cuts when the
fed chairman has said that we need a tax stimulous
package are all indications that Rudy is not ready
for prime time....I suggest that the Republican leaders
who are out on a limb in New YOrk like Guy Molinari
and the suburban leaders sit down and reconsider who
they believe can do two things. 1. get the REpublican
nomination 2. win the general election. Of course
they can publicly wait until Rudy looses on February
5th but immediately thereafter they need Plan B
