Voting machines

Posted by: Susan Elan - Posted in Albany, voting machines on Jan 23, 2008

The state Board of Elections was down one voting member today, leaving three people — two Republicans and a Democrat — to reach agreement on a new style of voting machine by the court-ordered deadline.

Democrat Evelyn Aquila is recovering from recent open-heart surgery, leaving the other members to deliver the three-vote majority required in her absence. The board’s two co-executive directors don’t have votes.

A federal judge has threatened to put in place a special appointee or throw board members in jail on contempt charges, the Associated Press reports.

The Help America Vote Act was enacted after the 2000 presidential elections to ensure voting accuracy and access for the disabled. New York is years behind federal deadlines to comply with the law.

What in hell is wrong with absentee ballots? These nitwits have found a way to charge the taxpayers, including the disabled, THOUSANDS of dollars PER VOTE. Where is the common sense? Special interests are one thing, but fiscal insanity for no good reason is just that: insanity. Put this money into medical research or personal health-care, not into the pockets of bourgeoisie machine companies and salesmen.
