Westchester loses its tech guy

January
25

Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano is losing a key member of his administration — Chief Information Officer Norman Jacknis.

Jacknis, who has held his post for a decade, is leaving on Feb. 14th to become a technology advisor for Cisco Systems in California, Spano’s office announced today. He will be part of a consulting unit that helps CEOs and public officials learn to use technology in more innovative ways.

“This is an opportunity to take what I’ve been doing in Westchester to a worldwide stage,” Jacknis said in a statement.

As Spano’s chief information officer, Jacknis won praise for leading a technological revolution in county government — one that Spano repeatedly touts as a major achievement of his administration.

Spano, in a press release, described as “mind-boggling the work that Jacknis accomplished.

“Every single department has been touched by his creativity and intervention,” Spano said. “We’ve gone from the Dark Ages to the 22nd century as far as I’m concerned. I certainly understand why his skills are in demand.â€?

Spano said Deputy CIO Marguerite Beirne, who has worked closely with Jacknis, will take over as acting CIO.

If he’s anything like Andy Spano, he’ll bankrupt that firm in no time.

    Hey Ed,
Jacknis is a professional, not a pol. You can dump on Spano if you want, but there are good capable people who work within government. Everybody’s not Bill Ryan. Jacknis is one of the guys who knows what he’s doing – and there are others – and he’s doing the thing you should criticize others for not doing: leave government, and go prove yourself in business working in a serious capacity for a major corporation. In this, going to California is hardly cashing in on local political contacts.

Good. I wish him well. If what you say is so, and I assume it is, he was wasting time associating with this group of charlatans.
