Spano still undecided, but another possible Senate candidate emerges

February
29

Kudos to Elizabeth Benjamin at The Daily Politics for her blog item about another possible candidate for Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins. Its Hartsdale Republican Mary Mahon, an ex-Pataki appointee and former top lawyer at the Long Island Railroad.

Mahon has circulated her name as a candidate against Stewart-Cousins in the 35th SD this year and even launched her own website.

Former State Sen. Nicholas Spano, the Yonkers Republican who lost to Stewart-Cousins in 2006, is still mulling whether to run this year. In an e-mail to Politics on the Hudson, he said he expects to meet soon with Mahon.

“Mahon called me last week to introduce herself,” Spano said in the e-mail. “I will be getting together with her shortly. I have been approached by several people who are interested in the race. Welcome aboard !!!!”

What a great idea – to have a woman run against Andrea Stewart-Cousins!
Although I never met her, I just read her bio and she seems like a real person…

Oh great! A former MTA hack and Pataki appointee!

And Spano seems to like her!

I bet Ed Lurie is keen on her, too.

    The Senate Republicans are doomed.

if nick spano is not going to run..the person that does
needs to have high name id and popularity in the district
beating an incumbant is no easy task..if the state committee
is serious about it..they should poll the names they
think might be able to take on stewart cousins

WELL – IF NICK SPANO DOESN’T RUN – I WOULD BE OPEN TO HELPING SOMEONE ELSE AGINST COUSINS. THE PROBLEM IS – WE NEED TO HAVE A SERIOUS CANDIDATE THAT WILL ATTRACT DEM SUPPORT AS WELL AS REPS AND IND. SOME OF THE NAMES I HAVE HEARD LACK ALL.. RUN SPANO – PLEASE RUN! I THINK HE IS OUR BEST SHOT AT BEATING DO NOTHING COUSINS!

I have met Mary at a few fundraisers for John McCain and she is a very smart woman. She will make a great candidate because she knows a lot about government and how it works (or doesn’t work). Good luck Mary – let us all know when you have your first fundraiser so I can support you.

Knowing how Government works, or doesn’t work, doesn’t automatically translate into being a legislator. Let’s see who is interested and pick the best candidate. I think we all agree that Cousins needs to go.

I would never vote for a Republican with ties to Pataki and the MTA. And her choice of fundraising consultants is highly suspicious.

Imagine the fun Democrats will have running against a former MTA executive. The crappy service. The cost overruns. The campaign mailers practically write themselves.

  8. Francis Vecellio

With Obama at the top of the ticket, Stewart-Cousins is going to win big regardless of whether Spano is the candidate or not.

When will one of these candidates tell us truthfully what they will do for US instead of asking what we can do for THEM? They’ve all become such political sophisticates that they’ve forgotten the central point of the whole operation.
