A day after hosting a press conference with other county executives from the region to criticize Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s budget, Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano took his campaign against unfunded state mandates to the state Commission on Property Tax Relief.
Spano testified at the commission’s hearing in Tarrytown this afternoon.
“I find it ironic that I am speaking before the Governor’s Commission on Property Tax Relief when it is the Governor’s proposed budget that is calling for cost shifts that would do the opposite,” Spano said, according to a copy of his prepared remarks.
As he did on Tuesday, Spano complained that Spitzer’s budget shifts too many costs to county governments, which leaves local officials few options but to raise taxes.
“I firmly believe that we will never see permanent long-term local tax relief unless this Commission recommends changes in the way the state partners with its counties, local governments and school districts,” Spano said. “Governor Spitzer’s promised change did not occur on “Day One.â€? If it is to occur on day two, attitudes and policies must be radically different, and this Commission is the ideal vehicle to make that happen.”
The commission was created by Spitzer earlier this year and is led by Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi.

Why do we even pay county tax in Westchester. Most other states have no county government or assets. Look at Connecticut. Right next door to NY and they approx. $3200 property tax where in Westchester you would pay approx. $10,000 for the same property. Go ahead and throw in the CT “car tax”. No biggie. You only pay about $250 a car.
Throw in 3 cars in CT and you are still under $4K.
So Westchester, what does that other $6K get you??
I’m moving to CT.
