Reisgnation in wake of Clinton ‘monster’ comment
A top adviser to Barack Obama has announced her resignation in the wake of the furor over her description of Hillary Rodham Clinton as a “monster.’’
Stephanie Power, a professor at Harvard University who has been a foreign policy adviser to Obama since 2005, made the comment in an interview with The Scotsman newspaper.
In the interview, she used a profanity to describe Obama’s loss, saying his campaign “f***** up in Ohio’’ and that “Hillary is going to town on it because she knows Ohio’s the only place they can win.’’
“She is a monster too,’’ Power added. “That is off the record. She is stooping to anything.’’
The newspaper said it published the comment because Power had agreed in advance that the entire interview would be on the record.
Several members of Congress who support Clinton—including Rep. Nita Lowey, D-Harrison—said in a conference call with reporters this morning that an apology issued by Power did not go far enough.
The Obama campaign announced the resignation in an email shortly before noon.
“With deep regret, I am resigning from my role as an advisor the Obama campaign effective today,’’ Power stated in the email. “Last Monday, I made inexcusable remarks that are at marked variance from my oft-stated admiration for Senator Clinton and from the spirit, tenor, and purpose of the Obama campaign. And I extend my deepest apologies to Senator Clinton, Senator Obama, and the remarkable team I have worked with over these long 14 months.â€
