Mahon trumpets Irish endorsement

March

Mary Mahon, the Hartsdale Republican who intends to run against state Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, sent out a press release least night touting the endorsement of the “board of the Irish-American Republicans.”

According to the release, the group is a “national organization dedicated to the promotion of Republican values among Irish-Americans and an advocate for peace in Ireland.”

“Mary Mahon’s long dedication to the people of New York and her determination to be a voice for Westchester County families will make her an outstanding sate senator,” said Grant Lally, the organization’s National Co-Chairman, in the release. “This district is a prime pick-up opportunity for Republicans this fall and we are dedicated to making sure that Mary is victorious. ”

Mahon, who has yet to formally announce her candidacy, is a former top lawyer at the Long Island Railroad. She did, however, recently launch her own website.

    What nonsense.

Her husband is on the board of this group, a self-styled bunch of wannabees, whose idea of political activism is to attend a cocktail party.

I doubt there was even a meeting to discuss the endorsement; her hubby asked someone to send out a news release.

If this is how she campaigns, it will be a short-lived candidacy.

It looks like Andrea Stewart-Cousins’ folks are starting to attack Mary Mahon already. This is a good sign for her candidacy.

Ms. O’Riordan – you obviously didn’t look at their website http://www.IrishGOP.org which shows they have over a dozen state chapters and Senator McCain and Governor Pataki are on their Board. Or you looked at their website and just exposed your ignorance, perhaps you would think people would just take your word for it and not look at the website themselves – no such luck.

Congrats Mary! Keep up the great job!

As I Republican, I am offended that someone with no history of political activism now wants to run for this important State Senate seat.

Accepting a cushy patronage job from Pataki does not make one a hardworking Republican activist.

And Names on a website (or letterhead) don’t make an organization real.

Those of us who are active in Republican politics know that this Irish GOP group was responsible for submitting many of the early names on the McCain Delegate list in New York State this year.

Unfortunately, their list consisted of many Democrats, Independents, or Republicans who lived in the wrong Congressional District, and poor Ed Cox had to quickly file an amended Delegate list with the Board of Elections.

They caused a major embarrassment to the McCain campaign, and could have cost McCain dozens of Delegates.

By the way, what was the date and location of the meeting where the Irish GOP actually voted to endorse Mahon?

Or did her husband and his friends just decide to send out a press release?

If they were a real organization, they’d interview several candidates before endorsing the wife of one of their officers.

  4. NO WAY

Mary Mahon is not the GOP candidate that can succeed against Andrea-Stewart Cousins. Nobody knows who this woman is or anything about her except that she had a patronage job with LIRR during the Pataki administration…

Republicans need to get Nick Spano back into this race!

  5. Richard Grayson

There has to be an alternative to Nick, who couldn’t win as an incumbent Senator, and this Patronage Princess, Ms. Mahon, who has never been active in Republican politics.

Mary Mahon dosent have a chance of beating Cousins-Mahon and her consutants are a joke-she has no clue nor does she have any experience-she also has no support in the Westchester Republican or Conservative Parties-its nice that the Irish Republicans a national committee likes her-try getting elected without local support-

  7. Carol Ferris

    Who are Mahon’s consultants?

I hear she hired one of Pataki’s fundraisers. Anyone know who else is involved?

  8. the consultant

I would like to know from my respected and knowlegable
poster collegues other than nick who would they suggest
run for the office…the district is democrat in registration liberal in ideology and includes the town
of greenburgh where the voters are unable to pull
    the lever for republicans

  9. deek

irish republican thats funny….go read a history book

  10. Abin Sur

To answer Mr. Edelman: the problem isn’t the district or the voters in Greenburgh—it’s the complete and utter lack of imagination shown by recent Senate Republican Campaign Committee efforts.

Aside from abysmal-looking marketing material, the SRCC’s tactic in these races is always the same: throw lots of money into the race and use it to mail a lot of very negative stuff early and often.

It didn’t work for Spano. Or Maureen on Long Island. Or Barclay upstate.

A good candidate can beat Andrea, but not if they are saddled with decision-making by Ed Lurie’s heirs.

Mary is indeed the most qualified and principled to run for this seat. She will appeal to Yonkers as well as suburban voters. It’s time for new blood and a conservative alternative to the scandal-plagued New York State Democrats.
