March
11

Pressure from political leaders is mounting for Gov. Eliot Spitzer to resign.

Aides said he has not made a decision, but Lt. Gov. David Paterson was already talking to legislative leaders to about taking over, but said this afternoon that he has not heard what the governor plans to do.

Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco is saying he would seek impeachment proceedings in the Legislature is Spitzer doesn’t resign within 48 hours.

The state Conservative Party is also calling for Spitzer’s resignation today, saying “do it now.”

Said Conservative Chairman Michael Long, “regardless of what mistakes Eliot Spitzer has made, today he can do the right thing for New York.  Gov. Spitzer should resign immediately.  Any delay, any vacillation can only deepen public disgust with this terrible situation.”

Citizens Union, a New York City good-government group that backed Spitzer, also called for him to step down.

“Eliot Spitzer has now lost the credibility to continue to serve as an effective governor and a believable agent for reform,” the group said.
