Gov. Eliot Spitzer will announce his resignation at 11:30 a.m. today in Manhattan, aides confirmed.
He will resign as the 58th governor of New York amid a sex scandal that has rocked his administration and state government. The Associated Press is reporting that the resignation will be effective Monday.
Aides were being notified this morning, according to multiple reports.
One aide said Lt. Gov. David Paterson’s office was calling some aides asking them to stay on as part of a new administration.
Spitzer apologized Monday after reports that he was tied to a prostitution ring and had regularly had rendezvous with prostitutes in Washington D.C. and other parts of the country.
Were Spitzer to resign, Lt. Gov David Paterson would be sworn in as the next governor.
Paterson, 53, who is legally blind and would be the state’s first African-American governor, called legislative leaders earlier this week seeking their support for an eventual takeover.
Spitzer has been weighing his options as he remained holed up in his Fifth Avenue apartment with lawyers, family and close aides.
Lawmakers and aides said Spitzer was determining whether to resign as part of a potential plea deal to avoid criminal prosecution.

He showed up late, as is usual for all of his ilk. John Daly was today disqualified from a simple golf tournament for arriving late. It might be interesting if just one of our “public servants” actually wore a watch and used it. Maybe this is one more reason why we never have an on-time budget in this state.
