Bruno: Spitzer Was Trying To “Destroy Me”

March
24

Amid a report in the New York Times today that former Gov. Eliot Spitzer was deeply involved in efforts to damage politically damage Republican foe Joseph Bruno, Bruno said he knew all along that Spitzer was trouble.

“The concern ought to be, doing that to me, using the power of the executive, a (Albany) DA just away walking away, whitewashing, covering up,” Bruno said this morning on 1300-AM in Albany.

“What on earth do 19 million people, what protection do they have, that somebody in great power won’t just make a decision to destroy their lives?”

The Times article, citing unnamed sources, said an investigation being prepared by Albany County District Attorney David Soares will show that Spitzer was closely involved in trying to release records that showed Bruno was using state aircraft for political purposes.

Spitzer, who resigned a week ago amid his involvement in a prostitution ring, had said he knew nothing of the effort by aides to release the information on Bruno.

Bruno responded today, “He acted like he was my best friend, looked me in the eye, extending his hand way back when he was truly trying to destroy me. It’s shameful.”

Soares is expected to release his findings this week after reopening a probe into whether former communications director Darren Dopp perjured himself when he gave statements to Soares and the state Public Integrity Commission.

  1. Spit Her

    Spitzer is a creep.

    Good riddens.

  2. Bruno correct

Bruno is correct on this one, you hate to kick a man when he is down, but Spitzer was a mean person who tried to take out those who disagree with him by any means necessary.

Democrats agree…that’s why no one defended Spitz when the stuff hit the fan

if patterson has to resign my understanding is that
bruno would be “acting” governor..and also majority
leader and would be able to execute both positions
    simultaneously..what a joke

If the “ethics” committee did its job, there would be no need for this kind of stuff. The irony is that an unethical governor was trying to do an ad-hominem ethics job because he knew the ethics people wouldn’t. Both sides are happy that the ethics people do nothing, but it affords them the incentive to do it themselves surreptitiously.

And, after Bruno is relieved, Silver steps in. That would be the only way, it seems, to get Silver to start answering some questions. Ironic here, too, that in order to get rid of any of these people, we have to have them appointed governor first.

If Zero Mostel and Phil Silvers did this one, it would be “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way to Albany.”

    Except it isn’t funny.

With a soundtrack from the Steve Miller Band – “Take the Money and Run.”

The New York state legislature is starting to exhibit the qualitites of its dysfunction as its reputation has
been labeled in the past..i am afraid the only cure
is TERM LIMITS…that will cure these long term
    guys of institutional abuse

  10. Wahoo

There is no question that term limits is the right way go to go. Institutional and individual corruption and laziness sets in when they are there too long.

The Founding Fathers never intended “public service” to be a full, life-long career. Besides, many of these Albany types (and others) only serve themselves, not the public.

Establishing term limits should be a top agenda.

Term limits, then they become wealthy de-facto lobbyists for special interests. You can’t win with this bunch. One of them made 50 grand for making a phone call, if you remember. And, he’s still in operation, spouting now and again about “good government”, like a prehistoric geyser. Just one that quickly came to mind, and a Republican, sad to say.
