Sen. George Maziarz, R-Newfane, Niagara County, expected by many Republicans in western New York to run for the congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-Clarence, Erie County, surprisingly said today he’s staying in the state Senate.
Maziarz, a Republican, was saying Friday that he would run if he had the support of his family. Yet apparently he changed his mind over the weekend. Most GOP county chairmen were backing Maziarz.
So his decision leaves one less seat that Republicans will need to defend in hopes of maintaining their two-seat majority in the Senate.
From Maziarz’ statement:
“I am sincerely thankful for the many, many calls of encouragement and advice I have received in the past few days. I am also extremely grateful for the love and support of my family—my wife, Beverly, and my girls, Kristina and Tricia, who have selflessly encouraged me.
It has been a difficult decision, one my family and I have not taken lightly. Today, I would like to announce that I will not be running for Congress.”
Then he added: “All in all, it is in the New York State Senate where I feel I can do the most good for my district and this region.”
