The dirty work of the Westchester legislature

March
28

Some things just speak for themselves, such as this headline on a  press release from the Westchester Board of Legislators today:

“COUNTY BOARD FORMS SEPTIC SUB COMMITTEE TO PROVIDE COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH TO SEPTIC POLICY.”

Newly-elected Legislator Peter Harckham, the leader of the new sub-committee, explained in the release that: “Nothing is more important to protecting our fragile drinking water supplies than formulating comprehensive septic policy.  The benefit of this committee is that it will provide an opportunity for all of the policy makers and stakeholders to meet regularly and to build early consensus on policy since it will be formulated collaboratively.”

I didn’t even know that there WERE septic subs. Where does the board of health stand on this matter? Get out there into the deli’s and start issuing fines.

While I appreciate Glenn’s attempt at humor with the headline, the need for comprehensive septic policy is a serious issue, especially in northern Westchester where old, failing septic systems are a clear threat to our drinking water supplies.
