Fred Dicker in today's New York Post reports on the existence of a secret "hatchet-job" unit in the New York State Police. Like a political SS of sorts, it's said to have been used by both Pataki and Spitzer to dig up dirt on political adversaries, including unfriendly reporters.

The Post reports this is a main reason Paterson forced out the head of the State cops last week. This is a new scandal that may just be starting.

A big "right on!" to Sue Didna. Fred Dicker has long had the most righteous stuff coming from Albany.

Fred Dicker is the living exemplification of the term "without fear or favor" in journalism. He chastises all who are foul in politics, regardless of station or political party.

Who we miss: Dan Lynch, the ballbusting former managing editor/columnist for the TU.

But, good news: Phil Reisman, Glenn Blain, and Jorge Fitz-Gibbons of the JN are closing in on Pulitzers, as they are traditional good journalists who work without that same "fear or favor" and labor in behalf of us citizens.

Hey LoHud political reporters: Why no mention of how Fred Dicker at the Post did the work, followed the leads, put the pieces together, and ate your lunch while you sat in the office reading the news wires? I'm sure you guys turn up your noses at the Post's style of journalism, but going out and getting the story, and using critical thinking skills, used to be what journalism is all about. You guys could learn a thing or ten from ol' Fred.

The funny thing about all of this (if there is anything here that can be called funny) is that Joe Bruno probably skated on this issue both because there is no ethics oversight up there and that his accuser, the Steamroller, was seen by many to be out of control and dangerous to all of them, Reps and Dems, if he were pissed enough, and it didn't take much to get him pissed. A competent, honest, and believable governor could have got Joe, if not removed, at least seriously embarrassed on various issues, not just airplane use. Problem is, when it comes to ethics, Silver would probably try to protect Bruno in the end so that an ethics imbroglio didn't erupt that would spill any lava his way. They all want to make sure they retain a firm, controlling grip on that "ethics" committee so that it doesn't become populated with reformers.

From a Democrats standpoint...I agree with you all this time.

Spitz was guilty, everybody knew he was guilty, but they were afraid of him because of his mean, nasty streak. Soares and the bunch all quaked in their boots.

Give Andrew Cuomo credit for having the guts not to whitewash his report. And even as a Democrat, I give Bruno credit for being a stand-up guy.

Ding-dong, the witch is dead. And all the brave little munchkins like Soares come out from under their rocks and start playing a combination of Humphrey Bogart and Thomas Jefferson.
