NYRA Found To Violate Bidding Laws

The state Commission on Investigation, which has been getting ink this week, released an investigation this morning that found the New York Racing Association violated state law when it gave a no-bid contract to a New York City law firm.
NYRA has been under fire for giving a five-year, $125,000 a month the contract to Getnick & Getnick to serve as its counsel as NYRA seeks to emerge from bankruptcy and continues to run thoroughbred tracks at Aqueduct, Belmont and Saratoga.
The commission found that the contract should have been put out to bid, despite NYRA’s claims that the firm was the only one who had intimidate knowledge of NYRA’s dealings.
“Despite claims by NYRA and Getnick & Getnick that the law firm could be hired as a sole source without competitive bidding, the Commission strongly disagrees,” Commission Chairman Alfred D. Lerner said.
No immediate word from NYRA on the decision. The commission said laws should be changed so the Racing and Wagering Board and a racing oversight board can better regulate NYRA’s contracts.
The little-known Commission on Investigation made headlines yesterday when they announced they will be investigating the investigations into the Troopergate scandal.

They just come out of bankruptcy and, somehow, contrary to all reason, are handed another political contract , and the first thing they do is break the law by handing out no-bid contracts. You can’t make this stuff up.
I’d love to see Westchester County judges investigated for trading favors for assigning trustees. The sort of low brow trustee you wouldn’t trust your lunch money with, but whatever. Nothing changes.
