Here’s the statement Maggie Williams, campaign manager for Hillary Clinton, issued last night on the departure of chief strategist Mark Penn:
“After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as Chief Strategist of the Clinton Campaign; Mark, and Penn, Schoen and Berland Associates, Inc. will continue to provide polling and advice to the campaign.
“Geoff Garin and Howard Wolfson will coordinate the campaign’s strategic message team going forward.”
UPDATE – Clinton, this afternoon, issued a statement on the Columbian Free Trade Agreement, which was the issue that ultimately forced Penn’s departure from the campaign. Penn, as is now well known, met with Columbian officials to help them craft a strategy that would allow the measure to move forward.
Clinton’s statement:
“I am disappointed that President Bush has decided to send the Colombia Free Trade Agreement to Congress. As I have said consistently for several months, I oppose signing any trade deal with Colombia while violence against trade unionists continues and the perpetrators are not brought to justice. The United States should be pursuing trade agreements that promote human rights and worker rights, not overlook egregious abuses.
“I will vote against the President’s Colombia trade agreement, and will urge my Senate colleagues to do the same.”

Enough cannot be said of the efforts of Assemblyman Richard Brodsky fighting to protect the people of New York.
isn’t it great…while she is out campaigning against
the agreement..the guy she is paying 5 million to for
polling and strategy is trying to get the agreement
passed…I guess it depends on what the meaning of the word
“is” is.
Blue, blue, skip to my blue…
See, Mike, now you’re starting to get what I’ve been saying about McCain and his pet lobbyists.
BTW, all- I emailed Elizabeth Johnson, they’re working on fixing the blue background thing.
my blue heaven
Walt ..penn was lobbying for something while he was
advising Hillary who was against it..but she was
paying him all the while..not quite the same is it?
Not buying it, Mike. He resigned (yeah, it was only from one of his jobs with Clinton) because of the appearance of impropriety, his being a lobbyist and all.
If they did the same thing over at McCain HQ, would there be anyone left? Keep in mind that many of McCain’s lobbyists are still employed by their firms, and are conducting business at the same time they are working for McCain.
Maybe you’re right, it’s not quite the same- it’s worse.
Thanks to the JN for getting rid of the blues, BTW!
Mr RJ – hmm, sure your initials aren’t RB? I like Abe Lincoln, but I don’t praise him in every political post.
