The candidates meet the editors
Ace Journal News Editor (and occasional TJN roving correspondent) Henry Freeman, who’s down in Washington for an industry conference, sends this dispatch:
The three major presidential candidates over the last two days addressed a joint meeting of the Newspaper Association of American and the American Society of Newspaper Editors being held in Washington, DC.
The general assessment from many editors after hearing the three was:
• McCain: Engaging, humorous and human.
• Obama: Underperforming. Everybody was talking about how flat he was; unfocused and rambling on answering questions.
• Clinton: Much more substance; talked about what she would do; but long-winded.
On Monday, McCain announced his “reluctant” endorsement of the Shield Law currently in the Senate, which aims to give reporters protections from being forced to reveal confidential news sources. Clinton and Obama later signed on as co-sponsors of the bill.

Henry Freeman is an “ace” news editor? Judging by the product, one would be hard pressed to identify any professional editorial oversight of the news at the JN.
