New State Police Commissioner Harry Corbitt is being confirmed now by the state Senate.
Senators this morning heaped praise on Corbitt, 60, who retired from the State Police four years ago as a colonel after a 25-year career.
“This is the right person at the right time,” said state Sen. Eric Adams, D-Brooklyn, a former New York City cop.
During a Senate Finance Committee meeting this morning, senators told Corbitt that he has a tough task to improve the morale of the State Police, which has been tied to former Gov. Spitzer’s attempts to damage Senate Republican Leader Joseph Bruno and accused of going after state political leaders.
Corbitt responded, “I feel the same way. I was proud to be a trooper and some of that pride has been tarnished” since he retired in September 2004.
He will earn $136,000 in the post and will replace Acting Superintendent Preston Felton, whose brief tenure was marred by the scandals.
