Nonna says “No” to raise

Westchester Legislator John Nonna made it clear tonight that he is not among those on the Board of Legislators who wants a raise.
“I do this for the love of it,” said Nonna, a Pleasantville Democrat, during a public hearing held by the Compensation Advisory Committee.
“I think in these tough economic times, it’s hard to justify a raise,” said Nonna, who was among a handful of people to speak at the public hearing. He was the only member of the legislature to attend the session.
Nonna was challenged, though, by Catherine Lederer-Plaskett, president of the Westchester Coalition for Legal Abortion-Choice Matters. She argued in favor of raises for legislators.
Lederer-Plaskett noted that Nonna was only elected last year and that other, longer-serving legislators deserved a raise.
“I am arguing for people who do their jobs well,” Lederer-Plaskett said.
William Mooney, chairman of the advisory panel, said he was disappointed so few people showed up at the hearing but admitted the 5 p.m. start time may have been too early. The panel is expected to release its recommendations by the end of the month.

What genius told Mooney to hold this hearing at 5 p.m.? Maybe it was Ryan himself.
And what horse does the abortion maven have in this race? Why would she want them to get raises? Does her group get grants of taxpayer money from the County legislators?
I fail to see what abortion issues have to do with legislators’ pay. Wahoo is correct to be puzzled.
What media bias! 3 Republicans on County Leg have been publicly opposed to pay raises and stipend raises for months, but notice their names do not appear in today’s article in The Journal News. The reporter makes it seem that only Leg. Nonna is against the pay raises, while Rep. Legislators Oros, Maisano and Burrows have spoken out against the ridiculous raises since the day they were proposed, yet they never received front page coverage. It is only when a Dem opposes the raises that it makes The Journal News cover. It is so annoying how biased The Journal News is against Reps.
Good point. They weren’t at the hearing but should have been included in the article.
Ooops. It’s not just the Democrats. The so-called conservative Republican mayor of Yonkers has just put out a new budget that if passed will raise property taxes 8.5 percent, and also increases spending 4 percent.
And Yonkers just got socked with about 24 percent from the big spenders in the County.
Amicone spends taxpayer money like a drunken sailor, or a liberal County or Albany Democrat. Maybe he admires Shelly Silver, Bill Ryan and Andy Spano.
Meantime, all those gas-guzzling Yonkers city cars and SUVs are still tooling around to whatever points.
Amicone should read the AP business wire. Many big corporations are cutting jobs and costs. But he keeps spending like it’s good times. Poor job on that budget.
These Yonkers Republicans have long been, and continue to be, an embarrassment. They stand for nothing but politics as usual, and are an impediment to finally getting fiscally responsible people elected on the country level. Many of these people would be Democrats (if the Democrats would have them,) so they could perpetuate their uselessness ad- infinitum. They talk a good game. Period.
It would be interesting to see how much Yonkers taxes have gone up under Amicone, percentage-wise. I think it’s a lot, although one year was a hangover from another big Republican talker and spender, John Spencer.
Yonkers also has a city income tax and a real estate transfer tax, etc. They must waste millions of dollars. Nobody ever says “no” or really cuts back down there. They just keep spending and sending the bills to the taxpayers.
On tonight’s local news, they talked about being on the edge of the cliff next year in Yonkers. Is there anything wrong with preparing for that right now and cutting back this year? Or does that make too much sense?
that’s “county level,” not country/ Too much patronage down there; too many taxes; too many city cars; too many credit cards; too much chicanery and illegality clumsily explained away and then buried. In short, same as everywhere else – except these are Republicans who should know better.
Maybe the Pope should specially bless Yonkers tomorrow when he visits St. Joseph’s seminary. The city seems in need of an exorcism of some kind.
Off to prepare for my midnight ride. It’s the Eighteenth of April. Different year, but why quibble? It’s still a horse, not a city SUV borrowed from Yonkers.
I had an old history prof who told us that Revere got that job because he enjoyed late-night imbibing, and was one of the few people who was up at all hours. Whatever, he did his job! And I doubt the patriots supplied the horse or the hay.
Yonkers is in poor financial shape. Whether that’s because of Amicone or just a nation trend is debatable. What shouldn’t be debatable is that is the budget needs to be cut, meaning putting people out of work, Amicone owes it to the cops, fireman and teachers to make a good-faith gesture and downsize his own office and remove many of his political appointees from the budget first.
On all other accounts, Yonkers is booming and Amicone has been one of the best mayor’s. That doesn’t mean he’s off the hook though… His actions in this budget crisis will be closely watched.
NONNA SAYS NO TO RAISE. OK, LET’S SEE IF HE TAKES IT ONCE BIG BOSS RYAN PUSHES IT THROUGH.
FOR THAT MATTER, SAME DEAL FOR THE GOP. THEY’VE OPPOSED THE RAISES IN THE PAST, YET THEY ALL ACCEPTED THEM.
I’M A PROUD REPUBLICAN BUT THAT’S HYPOCRISY REGARDLESS OF YOUR PARTISAN FLAVOR.
LET’S WATCH WHO VOTES AGAINST THE RAISE BUT TAKES IT ANYWAY.
The Yonkers budget proposed by Amicone is a bad joke.
Schmitt is correct when he says some of Amicone’s own staff and a number of other City Hall white-collars should be shown the door. But so should others hit the bricks.
There is tremendous waste in Yonkers. That school budget alone is awash in waste. Minor percentage reductions in the school budget, accompanied by other prudent and easy to discern steps, would solve the budget problems in Yonkers.
There is no need for such a big tax increase. 8.5 percent is obscene for Yonkers residents in such difficult times. It could easily be held to 3 percent. This budget is poor management at its worst.
Nonna is at least coming out on the right side, so my fellow Republicans need not criticize him. Yet.
“Bob” is correct. None of the three Republicans on the Board are credited with having renounced this corrupt “raise ourselves” bill cozily posed by a majority party intimidated by its chairman.
Impeach Bill Ryan. He is the number one bad apple in our county. What a sad human being with blatantly egregious behavior. Even Lyndon Johnson would dismiss him.
