A tough campaign for Oppenheimer? – UPDATED

April
18

While they wait for former state Sen. Nicholas Spano to announce whether he will run again this falll, Senate Republicans appear to be targeting another Westchester-based Democrat: Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer.

Republican leaders confirm that they are encouraging Larchmont Mayor Elizabeth Feld to run against the Mamaroneck Democrat this fall. They have also promised to provide whatever resources she needs.

“A number of people have been encouraging me to run and I think it is largely because they understand my outrage at what’s been going on in Albany the last few years,” Feld, 47, said in a telephone interview.

Feld said she is still undecided about whether to run and will likely not make a decision for at least another week.

If she does run, Feld faces an uphill battle. The 37th District has more than 91,000 registered Democrats compared to about 55,100 Republicans. The district also has approximately 53,200 independents.

Oppenheimer will be seeking her 13th term.

UPDATED — Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno, in a telephone interview a few moments ago, confirmed that he is very much interested in Elizabeth Feld as a candidate to take on Suzi Oppenheimer.

“She’d be a huge asset to that constituency, I’ll tell you that,” Bruno said.

Bruno also said that if Feld chooses to run, Senate Republicans would “do everything we can do to help get her here.”

Spano’s done. Senate Republicans have a fresh face in that district, which makes a lot more sense.

As a resident of Larchmont, I have witnessed the great things Mayor Feld has done. It would be refreshing to see someone like her up in Albany.

    Run Liz- we need you!!

if ms feld is so outraged, she should have moved to troy to run against the architect of the outrage, joe bruno.

exactly, how does she suppose she is going to change him, when she would become a wholly owned subsidiary of him and the senate republican campaign committee.

  4. the consultant

oopenheimer has been totally in effective as a member
of the democratic minority..she is also a little quirky
and getting old in the tooth…feld is a perfect replacement
and don;t blame joe bruno’s archictectural style when your
party has given us a corrupt comptroller, a sleazy former
governor and a present governor with enough baggage
    to fill a cargo plane

if you want to compare parties, shall i remind you that bruno is under federal investigation right now, likely to be indicted by the summer. and while we are at it, do you remember, guy vellella, charlie gargano, al d’amato, etc.
give me a break, anyone who believes that joining the senate republicans will allow you to reform albany, is definitely deluding themselves. and as for being long in the tooth, cesar trunzo, owen johnson, hugh farley, tom morahan, bill larkin, are all in their 80’s. and joe just turned 79.

laughing at republicans ha ha ha

  7. the consultant

oppenheimer has done nothing to reform albany..neither
did spitzer…your statement that bruno is likely
to be indicted by summer has no basis in fact..its
your wild imagination based on your biases…until
such time as the state senate is democratic which
may never happen..sending a democrat to that house
whether stuart cousins or oppenheimer brings
no benefit to westhchester cities towns and villages
whatsoever..you may not like the game..but until
such time as the way albany works is altered
it is in your best interests to replace oppenheimer
    with feld

They should just turn on the loudspeakers all around the Capitol, pipe in Barry McGuire’s “Eve of Destruction” very loud, and see if they get the message. Both parties.

Why don’t they ever call it ‘The Adam of Destuction?’ – Gloria Steinham

  10. the speculator

    Sorry Consulant.

Oppenheimer has fought aince she was the only Democrat fom Westchester in the Senate. Feld is an outstanding Mayor who would be a grat candidate – in the future, not now.

Liz do yourself a favor and do not let Joe Bruno the clown entice you to run on a lark.

By the way, since Yonkers received 48.6 of a requested 50 million dollars of State aid – then had no layoffs after predicting doom and gloom before, during and after the state budget discussions – Nick is DONE – I hope he is enjoying his career in lobbying and real estate.

Let’s not forget the increases in Education funding for Mount Pleasant and Greenburgh – the Republican transplant from Greenburgh runs and gets beat soundly in a Democratic presidential year..

I am a Rep…want the Reps to hold the Senate…want to keep the two party system alive in NYS…but let’s get real on this one…Suzy has whipped all challengers over past 20+ plus years and beat some strong Republicans when the district was much closer in registration.

Now look at registration – the seat is 20% more Dem than Rep and this is a presidential year which favors Dems. Liz F is a good candidate (although she is quite unpopular with Larchmont Republicans – who she back-stabbed a few years ago), but you can be sure that she will not break 40% of the vote in this race. By the way, no Rep has broke 40% against Suzy since I believe 1986. I am not sure that Suzy O has done anything to help this district during her tenure, but she is not about to lose now. She remains popular and has a huge advantage in voter registration. This is much-ado-about-nothing!

Yonkers still has a lot of problems. That projected 8.5 propery tax increase is going over like a lead balloon down there. Understandably. Is there a recession everywhere else but Yonkers? That Yonkers City Council better wake up and make cuts to that bomb of a budget.

Bob- You say that you want the GOP to keep the senate. How do you expect the party to rebuild in Westchester County if no one is challenging the Dems? The Republican Party is not going to make any gains if they just sit back and continue to let the Dems to run unopposed. It may be uphill battle, but if she is willing to do the hard work of being the candidate, the Party needs to rally around her. Suzi is one of the most ineffective legislators in the senate.

  14. politico

Suzi has either run unopposed or had a challenger without the resources to be competitive.

This will be her 13th term- time for a change!!!
