Democratic congressional candidate Jonathan Powers, who is running for a Buffalo-Rochester area seat, had to amend his campaign filings in recent days after the Federal Election Commission raised questions about reimbursements to himself and his campaign aide, Eben DuRoss.
In addition to agreeing Thursday to pay back campaign funds used to pay for his home office, Powers also had to address issues raised in a FEC letter in March about $12,000 in unexplained contributions to him and DuRoss, Gannett News Service has learned.
The campaign did amend its campaign filings by last Monday’s deadline and has agreed to pay back about $4,000 in rent for Powers’ campaign office.
Yet the amended filings appears to list as the purpose of some of the disbursements as just “reimbursements,” raising red flags for some Republicans for the lack of specificity. Republicans have said they plan to file a complaint with the FEC.
Powers campaign manager John Gerken said this morning that they believe they have adequately addressed the FEC’s concerns. He said he believes the reimbursements were for gas, food and other travel expenses.
“We amended it and to the best of the campaign’s knowledge, we are in full compliance with the FEC,” Gerken said.
Powers, an Iraq war veteran, is running for the congressional seat in the 26th District, which stretches from the Buffalo area to the Rochester suburbs. Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-Clarence, Erie County, is retiring.

Sounds like Gerken is in a pickle. Or, maybe he IS a pickle. Whichever, he’s got a lot of brine. Reminds me – what ever happened to Mrs. Heintz? Delightful lady. Kerry’s children called her “Stepmoney.” Next, she’ll marry Kissinger.
