Barack Obama’s campaign is downplaying his chances of winning today’s Pennsylvania primary, but the Illinois senator was upbeat this morning during a breakfast visit to a restaurant in Pittsburgh’s Strip District.
“We closed a big gap.’’ Obama told reporters. “We were down 20. This is always an uphill climb but what we feel is we’ve made significant progress. We have a great organization. A lot of it is going to depend on turnout today. And it’s really hard to gauge. We have over 200,000 new registrants. Do they all come out to vote? If they all come out to vote, they’re not being polled and we don’t know which way they’re going to break. We certainly feel we’ve got a chance.’’
In a memo issued this afternoon, the Obama campaign maintained that Hillary Rodham Clinton needs a big victory in a state that’s “tailor-made” for her presidential candidacy.
“Behind in delegates and sporting a 14-30 primary record (not good enough even to make the playoffs in the NBA Eastern Conference), the Clinton campaign needs a blowout victory in Pennsylvania to get any closer to winning the nomination. Even President Clinton said that only a ‘big, big victory’ will give her the boost she needs,’’ the Obama campaign stated.
The Obama campaign memo added, “While there are 158 delegates at stake in today’s primary, there are 157 up for grabs in the Indiana and North Carolina primaries two weeks from today. We expect that by tomorrow morning, the overall structure of the race will remain unchanged—except for the fact that there will be 158 delegates off the table.’’

A result to guarantee continued chaos, confusion and rancor….Hillary by 8 or 9.
