A Crackdown On Piracy Announced

May
5

“30 Rock” star Tina Fey joined Attorney General Andrew Cuomo this morning to support his legislation to combat film piracy in New York.

Cuomo said that reports show that more than 50 percent of all illegally recorded movies are filmed in New York. Yet Cuomo said that New York only charges illegal film recording as a violation and only a small fee for those convicted.

Cuomo announced the Piracy Protection Act to make it Class A misdemeanor with first-time offenders facing up to 1 year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Repeat offenders would face a felony.

Cuomo’s office is also creating a new special Assistant Attorney General “to coordinate local and state law enforcement efforts against film piracy.”
