Clinton wins Indiana and plans more travel

Posted by: Brian Tumulty - Posted in 2009, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, White House on May 07, 2008

It was shortly after 1 a.m. this morning when patrons at the Elbow Room bar in downtown Indianapolis suddenly began cheering at the announcement by CNN that Hillary Rodham Clinton had won Indiana.

With 99 percent of the votes counted, there was a sense of relief among Clinton supporters who earlier in the night had gathered in a downtown ballroom a few blocks away for the New York senator’s victory speech.

Some newspapers with early press times used headlines saying “Clinton claims Indiana victory’’ rather than making it definitive.

Clinton’s razor thin victory in this critical Midwest state bordering Illinois was touted by her campaign as a reason to continue campaigning in the remaining primary states, despite the decisive loss she incurred in North Carolina.

Indiana is the first state bordering Illinois that Obama has lost.

Clinton flew back to Washington tonight and planned to host a fundraiser at a D.C. hotel Wednesday night.

Her campaign announced she will be back on the campaign trail Thursday traveling to West Virginia, South Dakota and Orgeon.

Hillary is gone. Forget her. Obama is the nominee.

Hillary may be toast but she’s going to keep fighting until the convention, further hurting Obama. But it really won’t matter. Even if she quits today, McCain will still cruise to victory, as Barry’s hard-left stance and radical affiliations (Ayers, Wright, etc.) continue to dog him.

I am slightly perplexed. Prior to last night, the pundits all said the race was going to the convention. Obama was predicted to win North Carolina and until recently, Indiana. Nothing changed. Obama, had a nice win and a narrow loss. Prior to last night, Hillary had an upward climb to getting the nomination and after last night she stills has a tough path, so why the calls for her to get out now? It just seems that Democrats are looking for an excuse to dump Hillary.

I still think it is in her interest to stick around just in case something else comes up like Rev. Wright or to bargain for VP. But then again I am a Republican and am not sure what is in the Democrat’s best interest.
