Edwards’ campaign manager endorses Obama

May

Former Michigan congressman David Bonior, who served as John Edwards’ campaign manager, endorsed Barack Obama this morning.

“I was waiting for Sen. Obama to show me the fight that I wanted to see,’’ Bonior said in a conference call with reporters, indicating that he made his decision after seeing how Obama coped with adversity the last couple of weeks and fought to win the nomination. Bonior served as House minority whip during Republican control of the House and developed a reputation as one of then-Speaker Newt Gingrich’s fiercest adversaries.

He thinks the protracted Democratic primary has not hurt the party. “Even though there’s been rough patches in this campaign, I think it’s helped the candidate and I think it’s helped the country,’’ Bonior said. “And it’s given people a chance to participate.’’

And indicated Hillary Rodham Clinton will make a decision on whether to withdraw “at the appropriate time.’’

Edwards did not withdraw until after the South Carolina primary. His campaign was predicated on winning Iowa, but he continued after finishing second there and losing in New Hampshire and Nevada.

“There are the obvious factors of why people continue, why they don’t continue,’’ Bonior said when asked to draw an analogy between Edwards’ decision and the calls by some for Clinton to withdraw. “There are personal reasons. There’s financial reasons. There’s just raw political reasons just in terms of numbers. So all of those factors mixed together create a result. And how each factor weighs depend on the candidate. And so I can’t sit here today and speak for their campaign, the Clinton campaign. They will have to measure that based on their own thoughts and ideas. They have run a very aggressive campaign.’’

Bonior said he last spoke to Edwards over the weekend, but declined to reveal what was said. Edwards has not made an endorsement. Some media outlets have reported that Elizabeth Edwards, his wife, prefers Clinton because of her plan for universal healthcare.

One Response to “Edwards’ campaign manager endorses Obama”

    Oh, this is sweet!

First, the impotent George McGovern endorsed Obama, yesterday.

Now, the equally impotent David Bonior “comes out” in support of the putative Democrat nominee.

My Republicans will win with 400 electoral votes.

The petulant former congressman, Mr. Bonior, reacted during the 1998 impeachment trial like the grown kid who still hates his parents. What a “nothing” little bastard he was, and remains.

I really like the combination of Ted Kennedy, George McGovern, and David Bonior supporting Sen. Obama. There was a night club on old La Cienega in Los Angeles known as “The Losers’ Club,” in the early 1970s. These guys were charter members.

Dems, you destroyed yourselves by killing Senator Clinton. Good luck to you in another four years!
