Republicans to pick Congressional candidate
Republicans from Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Westchester counties will caucus tomorrow night to pick a candidate to challenge Democrat John Hall for the 19th Congressional district seat he won in 2006.
The expected contenders are Iraq war veteran Kieran Lalor of Peekskill, Westchester County Legislator George Oros, and Ossining resident and former Congressman Joseph DioGuardi.
The meeting will be held at Villa Barone, 466 Route 6 in Mahopac at 8 PM.
The Putnam Democrats hold their convention on June 3.

I’m voting for OROS. I would hope the Republican Party does the same. He’s the only guy that can win in November against Hall.
Not only did he drag his feet waiting to announce, Oros has done nothing but pose next to washed up politicians like Pataki and Kelly since he announced. That kind of do-nothing campaigning will result in certain defeat in November, just like Kelly. And since Oros has already dropped hints that he won’t stick around to do battle in a primary, he’s not likely to remain a candidate for very long since Kieran Lalor has enough support – and the determination, it appears – to keep him in the race through the primary.
it takes more than determination to run a primary and
win…but clearly this is going to be a contest of
who is the most conservative…..and if that is the
case it does not portend well for the fall,, particularly if the Iraq war becomes the centerpiece of the primary
if their is one
I received a personalized letter from George Pataki asking me to support George Oros. (Disclaimer: I am a former Pataki volunteer and contributor)
I know that the ex-Governor didn’t sit down and type every single one, but he certainly signed it. If this means that Pataki’s old war machine is behind George Oros, then George is A LOT stronger then I had initially thought. It is likely that all of the Pataki donors/volunteers received that same letter, and the ex-Governor’s operation is NO JOKE.
“Governor George E. Pataki
Dear Mr xxxxxx.,
I want to thank you for all the support you have given me over the years and for sharing in the positive contributions we achieved for New York State.
Now I want to ask you to join with me in another very important campaign, electing George Oros to represent us and the rest of the residents of New York’s 19th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
I have endorsed George Oros, a man who will diligently and conscientiously represent you and will bring a fiscally responsible philosophy to the halls of our nation’s Capitol. He is a proven tax-cutter who sincerely believes that rather than more government, our economy needs more reliance on the individual, more competition, more freedom for small businesses and more choices.
George Oros understands the legislative process and how to work across party lines. He believes we must curb spending while putting the brakes on taxes. He believes our national security must be maintained and that our representative in Washington must be responsive to the constituents he represents. He is also a proven winner in his current district which has a large Democratic majority.
That’s why we must elect George to Congress and give this fight everything we have.
Before his election to the county board, George was active in numerous local government positions and continues to serve in a variety of civic roles.
George Oros is eager to take on the challenges presented by Congress; he is eager to represent the needs of all of us in the 19th Congressional District; and he is eager to fight for fiscal integrity and sound budgetary policy.
But he needs our help. It is especially critical that he has adequate financial resources to take on an incumbent Congressman, so I am asking you to contribute as much as you can to Oros for Congress. Please be generous and if you can also help the campaign in any other way let him know of your availability.
WE NEED GEORGE OROS IN CONGRESS!
Sincerely,
(signed)
George E. Pataki
Governor of New York, 1995-2006”
Pretty impressive.
I’m glad the Governor did not ask me to vote in the Republican primary as well, because after he asked me to switch to the Independence Party for the ‘02 primary vs. Golisano, I never switched back.
A Pataki endorsement does not help Oros. Pataki looks like he might be indicted. The suicide of a state trooper who was closely involved with Pataki and the trooper-gate scandal is not good for Pataki
Why would Oros want the support of Pataki? He should be running away from Pataki.
Oros is a terrible campaigner.
It is possible that Pataki offered to help and Oros just didn’t know how to say know.
I imagine it would be an awkward conversation with the former governor. What would Oros say?:
“Um Governor, this is nothing personal, but I don’t think you need to help with the campaign. No, no this has nothing to do with the state trooper thing. No, I know Andrew Cuomo is a weasel, it’s just that this could get weird. Well, maybe you can come to the grand opening of my office. You want to write a letter? Um, uh sure we can do that. Let’s just make sure we send it to former Pataki volunteers. Or maybe just to state troopers. They still respect you right?”
Thanks for posting Pataki’s letter. Now everyone will know how tight former NY Governor George Pataki really is with George Oros. George Oros is not just a fellow Republican to George Pataki. Pataki has done plenty for Oros. This is just another example of Oros thinking it will work to his advantage to have Pataki’s support. If George Oros is chosen to run against John Hall, it will be a good show. Get ready Mr. Oros to start answering some questions.
The Dan Wiese scandal does not stop with Spitzer. The trail leads right back to Pataki.
Get the popcorn ready. This is gonna be fun!

Speaking on candidates, just saw this on Mid-Hudson News…

OSSINING – Former Congressman Joseph DioGuardi is the latest to announce that he wants to challenge Democrat House member John Hall this November.
DioGuardi, who served from 1985 to 1989, has sent a letter to all 1,100 Republican committee people in the five-county 19th Congressional District announcing that he is a candidate.
Two other Republicans want to challenge Hall – Kieran Lalor and Westchester Legislator George Oros.
DioGuardi told MidHudsonNews.com that despite his letter to GOP committee members, he will not officially announce his candidacy until all five county committees endorsement him as their candidate.
To demonstrate his seriousness about running and “to hit the ground running,†he said he has contributed $50,000 and loaned another $300,000 to his campaign and “I have been in touch with top-flight finance people across the nation to begin the process of collecting the resources to bring a winning message to the people of New York’s 19th Congressional District.â€
DioGuardi said when he served in the house, the Republican Party “did nothing to reign in out-of-control, wasteful spending and was punished for it at the ballot box in 2006.†Now, he said, “Congress, under speaker Pelosi and incumbent John Hall has made the problems worse.â€

I love it! He’s so serious about running that he’s not even going to announce it until all of the county committees pick him. In the meantime, someone sends a press release to the Mid-Hudson News announcing his non-announcement.
Bizarre, indeed.
Bizarre indeed, but no real surprise here, as DioGuardi’s campaign finance reports from a couple of months ago show he loaned his campaign a bunch of cash (something like a quarter mil, or so I heard). No need to do that unless you’re planning a run. But oh the arrogance of not formally announcing until you have the committees behind you. Makes one wonder whether there’s going to be an effort to rig the 5-county conclave tonight in Putnam in his favor. Let’s hope the JN sends a reporter and that he or she pays real close attention to whether things are done by the rules (if there are any) or if this is going to be a kangaroo court where the committee members’ votes are meaningless.
We also have to wonder whether DioGuardi is being so circumspect because he’s afraid of the heat he’d take from his own party over his KLA ties. Would the party faithful back him if there was time to develop his close ties to an organization known for death squads and links to terrorists.
DioGuardi is in it to split the conservative vote with Lalor, handing it to Oros. Brilliant.
DioGuardi more likely splits the insider vote, handing it to Lalor.
But DioGuardi is in it to try to convince himself that he is still relevant.
According to a friend who was at the meeting, Kieran Lalor won the 5-county endorsement. Word from the chairs is that all of the counties and former candidates are uniting behind Lalor.
John Hall, start packing!
Gouldman Accepts Nomination Promises to Bring Common Sense & A Dose of Reality To
Bill Gouldman stood before the Putnam County Republican Convention and accepted its nomination for State Assembly.
“People are being financially squeezed, facing hardship that has been unseen since the Great Depression. Policies that have caused or contributed to today’s hardships must be changed,†asserted the Putnam Valley resident.
“We need a new era, a new philosophy for New York; one that achieves more, cuts taxes, and stops politicians from writing blank checks with our money. As your nominee and as your State Assemblyman I’ll work hard every day to earn and keep your trust, Gouldman said.
If anyone else was there last night, it should have been clear that K. Lalor is the only candidate with a chance at beating Hall. Oros was the same old, boring career politician, and people just stopped listening to DioGuardi after about 30 seconds. Not my intention to dismiss these former, honorable public servants, but Lalor is a fresh face on the scene who could shake things up. Nice to see our party breeding some new winners out there!
Lalor will effectively neutralize the war as an issue in the campaign, and Hall’s do-nothing record in Congress will be hung around his neck like an albatross.
Hey Yellowdog / 7Curses / blah-blah: Better buy yourself a few gallons of Maalox and a case of Depends. Now that he has the backing of all five county committees, even more Lalor 2008 signs will be erupting in your neighborhood soon!
One more thing: My sources tell me that Oros did not even mention Pataki or Kelly’s name in his speech last night. Kind of strange not to tout your two highest-profile backers, especially since he was speaking solely to GOP committee members—the party faithful. Just goes to show that even Oros tacitly acknowledged that endorsements from Pataki and Kelly don’t carry the weight that some self-proclaimed pundits, insiders, and party hacks like to think they do.
KML KICKED THERE BUTTS LMFAO
GO KML WOOHOO!!!!
Good luck in therapy.
I only wish I could comment here, but I’m going to weasel out, because I live in the 18th Congressional District of the graybeard Nita Lowey, a faithful Democrat residing in God’s waiting room, who should be otherwise living in Sun City.
In any event, Republicans should regain the 19th CD this year.
When I was in high school in Califoirnia, slaving away walking precincts to reelect Ronald Reagan as Governor, in 1970, I remember the chant of Jim Buckley way back here: “Isn’t it time WE had a Senator?” You could say the very same thing about this year’s congressional race in the 19th.
Give it up George Oros! With your poor performance in the 5 county convention vote, how can you win a primary and even think you can beat John Hall in November. At least Dio Guardi has the brains and commonsense to drop out of the race and support Lalor, the winner of the convention. Your fellow republicans don’t want Oros, how can he think he can beat John Hall. What an ego.
Why not update this “news?” Kieran Lalor WON the Republican nomination for Congress in the 19th CD—by a landslide!
Next comes John Hall who will be sent packing back to his rock group after his notably undistinguished one term.
Kieran Lalor for Congress. YES.
Isn’t it time WE had a congressman?
You may appreciate my using Jim Buckley’s campaign slogan from his winning 1970 race for US Senate, when he beat the liberal Charles Goodell, father of the NFL Commissioner. I was a youngster in California slaving away to get Ronald Reagan re-elected as governor. Election night, we rejoiced that RWR had thrashed his evil opponent—but George Murphy, the incumbent GOP Senator, lost to John Tunney (“Tunn-edy,” as we had nicknamed him, for his close relationship to the Kennedy family). But, at 11 that night, p.s.t., my fellow Republican stalwart, now a professor of law and econ at a great university in the south, exclaimed, “We may have lost Murphy, but we got Buckley in New York!”
Truth told to self-interested hypocrites makes us righteous. And our nation will survive.
That’s why I like Lalor. God Bless him.
