Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is holding a hearing now on Long Island dealing with his ongoing investigation of pension fraud by private attorneys receiving public benefits, mainly at school districts.
The hearing is the first Cuomo is having around the state to deal with the issue, which he and Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli have been investigating. The problems have been found initially on Long Island, but is believed to be a statewide problem.
About a dozen lawyers who were working as consultants for school districts have already had their pensions stripped by DiNapoli.
They are also looking at the health benefits lawyers receive.
“When does the lawyer qualify for state pension benefits and state health benefits which are paid for by the taxpayers?” said Cuomo, explaining the focus of the probe.
Cuomo was joined on the panel by a group of bi-partisan Long Island lawmakers, including
Senator Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County; Assemblyman Robert Sweeney, D-Suffolk County; Sen. Kenneth Lavalle, R-Suffolk County; and Assemblyman Harvey Weisenberg, D-Nassau County.
