New Rochelle Post Office to be dedicated for Opera Star

Posted by: Glenn Blain - Posted in New Rochelle, Nita Lowey on May 30, 2008

Rep. Nita Lowey will be in New Rochelle Monday morning to help dedicate the post office at 3 Quaker Ridge Rd. in honor of Metropolitan Opera star Robert Merrill.

It was Lowey, a Harrison Democrat, who sponsored the legislation to re-name the building the Robert Merrill Post Office. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m.

Merrill, a New Rochelle native, died in Sept. of 2007. He was perhaps best known for the many times he sang the national anthem at Yankee Stadium. He also performed for every President from Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Ronald Reagan.

Geesh! He’s known for a lot of masterful performances, the least of which was Yankee Stadium anthem- singing! What a eulogy!
