Spencer’s outlook excellent after tonsil surgery

June
2

Former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer underwent surgery for tonsil cancer five weeks ago and will soon undergo radiation treatment, he and his doctor said this afternoon. His doctor told the Journal News that Spencer has an excellent chance of full recovery.
The 61-year-old Republican, who lost a 2006 bid to unseat Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, is expected to undergo radiation treatment beginning in a week or two as a precaution, said Dr. Michael Tom, an ear, nose and throat specialist in Yonkers.
“If it is caught early and the treatment is given, the prognosis and the cure rate is excellent,” said Tom, who made the diagnosis following a biopsy on April 16. “It was caught very early.”
Spencer acknowledged his diagnosis after being contacted by The Journal News. “I’m a lucky guy. I’m a very lucky guy,” Spencer said.
