Nita Lowey on Hillary Clinton

Posted by: Brian Tumulty - Posted in Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Nita Lowey on Jun 07, 2008

“It has been an honor to support Hillary Clinton – my friend, my constituent, and my Senator – throughout this extraordinary primary season,’’ Rep. Nita Lowey, D-Harrison, said following Clinton’s speech announcing she is suspending her presidential campaign and endorsing Barack Obama.

“I am so proud of all that she achieved, shattering historic barriers and standing up for Americans who most need a champion,’’ Lowey stated. “Senator Clinton, who inspires millions of men, women, and children through her deeds and example, will continue to be a strong voice for a better America….I will support and work hard to elect Barack Obama President of the United States so that we can reverse the Bush Administration’s failed policies at home and abroad.”

I think this also highlights something about New York politics itself. Both political parties lack innovation in that state. They are anti-grassroots and are very machine like. Actually, it’s not the members of each party per se. It’s the leadership of both parties. They aim to control from the top down. Tell me why there weren’t any elected Democrats who came out for Barack Obama in NY state before Clinton dropped out? It can’t be that every single one of them supported Clinton. It’s possible that if there were some they were forced to be silent. Then we saw the NY congressional delegation coming out to put their two cents in on the VP issue with Clinton. Rangel’s distrct is not in lock-step with Rangel on Clinton either!

Just look at the coronation of then candidate Spitzer in 2006. Not one delegate at the state Democratic convention in 2006 was allowed to break from voting for another challenger. There is a bright light however. The grass roots activists in NY are starting to awaken. I see that there is now a primary challenge to Sheldon Silver finally!
