During his press conference with Westchester County Executive Andrew Spano this afternoon, Nassau’s Tom Suozzi expressed optimism that tax reform legislation would get passed in Albany this year.
“I believe very strongly that by the end of this year we are going to get some serious legislation,” said Suozzi, who chaired the state’s Commission on Property Tax Relief. “We have a very unique set of circumstances here. Voter anger is as high as ever.”
Suozzi, the Nassau county executive, said he would have preferred that the legislature acted before the end of its scheduled session, but he also noted that Gov. David Paterson has left open the possibility of calling lawmakers back into session later this year.
“For the first time ever, we’ve got the governor taking a leadership role saying this is a statewide, systemic problem,” Suozzi said.
As for their day-long meeting at the county’s Lasdon Park, Spano and Suozzi both described it as an opportunity for the two suburban leaders to share ideas on such topics as child care, tourism and information technology.
“It’s the beginning of a dialogue that will go back and forth now so we can exchange ideas,” Spano said.

The Governor is on board. The Democrats and Republicans in the Senate are on board. The Republicans in the State Assembly are on board.
Who is out of the mix the Democrats in the Assembly. it appears that they are all alone on this.
The lone solid opposition.
It is time for a CHANGE. The residents in westchester should remember this and vote these people out of office in November. In westchester we have the chair of this committee Assemblywoman Sandra Galef. Where does she stand on this issue. She publicly says she wants a cap. But where does she really stand. Doesn’t she have the clout and does she not want it.
Obama talks about change. This voter agrees we need change in the state assembly.
You will loose in Nov because of this
This will not happen unless the Democrat Assembly bring it to the floor for a vote
Important update. See Fred Dicker’s article/column in today’s www.nypost.com.
Bruno was trying to pull a fast one, making all these calls to the teachers unions, which own him, and attempting to fake his approval of the cap to fool the citizens. He was kissing up to the unions. He was going to say OK for just a two-year cap, one with a “sunset” provision in it. Paterson turned him down.
Bruno is a slimy guy, just as slimy as Silver. This is just one more big example of how corrupt Albany is.
Bruno and Silver know the polls show the citizens back this cap with a 74 percent “do it” figure. Bruno will lose the state Senate if he doesn’t get honest soon on this one.
Where are the Consultant and others this one? I don’t think, or at least I hope, that the Consultant won’t defend that bum Bruno on this. Silver is just as bad.
hey wahoo..just got back from court…I agree with you.
a tax cap is long overdue…I have no reason to defend
Joe Bruno…and if the Republicans in the senate can’t
act like republicans in terms of tax policy maybe
they deserve to lose..because you know that the
democrats in the assembly just want to spend money
to appease their core constituencies..and here is
the great part..I have no dog in the hunt..I no
longer pay property taxes in new york..but i
did for many years and particularly the school
taxes are out of control…wildly out of control..
So, what exactly did Spano say about all of this? Nothing? Only Suozzi speaks? “It’s the beginning…” says Andy. “Now we can exchange ideas.” Well, what in hell does THAT mean? My take is that it means nothing. And “nothing” is complacency and agreement with the status quo. In another day, both he and Silver would be feathered and tarred. And Bruno would be tried as a traitor, a mealy-mouthed phony pseudo- Republican who represents only himself.
Spano’s too busy counting the loot with Ryan and the rest of the County Legislature.
This Albany crapola year after year is prime evidence why term limits are needed. And badly needed, at that.
