Skelos Pledges Property-Tax Relief

Senate Republicans elected Long Island Sen. Dean Skelos majority leader late Tuesday amid the abrupt resignation of the venerable Joseph Bruno.
Skelos quickly turned his agenda to dealing with the state’s high property taxes, pledging to work with Gov. David Paterson and the Democratic-led Assembly to find a remedy. Skelos said that if a property-tax cap is the answer, then he’ll work to get one approved.
“There is no issue that’s more important to the people of the state than relief from escalating property taxes,†Skelos told reporters after he was sworn into the position.
The day was another tumultuous day at the Capitol as lawmakers wrapped up the 2008 legislative session amid the turmoil of Bruno’s sudden resignation. It was an ironic end to a session that was rattled by the resignation of Gov. Eliot Spitzer in March because of ties to a prostitution ring.
A choked-up Bruno, Spitzer’s chief foe, said Tuesday that his decision to resign as Republican leader since 1995 was personal and had nothing to do with his legal troubles or his health.
Bruno, 79, also didn’t rule out the possibility of stepping down as a senator from the Capital region before his term expires at year’s end, and some Republican officials said they expect Bruno to leave office within weeks.
“Life decisions are never easy, and I’ve made a life decision,†Bruno said. “My life decision is step back and step out in an orderly way.â€

Skelos will be the first Greek American to be majority leader, I wish him well.
But I have said that the Senate GOP needed to elect “NEW LEADERSHIP”
Sen Seklos will have only one chance to get it right.
Their will be no second chances., so prove me wrong, and make me eat my words.
Prove you are that “NEW LEADERSHIP”
