State GOP Boss: I’m Cool With Skelos

June

mondello.jpgState Republican Chairman Joseph Mondello, who is rumored to be facing the ax, said he’s good buddies with incoming Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos, a fellow Long Islander.

“Dean and I have been close personal friends for many years,” said Mondello, who is in Albany for a state committee meeting. “We lived together in the same room when we were both counsels up here in Albany. He’s a great guy.”

Mondello rejected talk that was in the dark over Sen. Joseph Bruno’s announcement to step down as majority leader, saying Bruno had indicated to him for months that he was contemplating retirement.

“He’s been talking to me about this for months,” Mondello said. “But only in the last few weeks, did it get serious. I have no right to take about someone’s private life. Someone of this magnitude has the right to make his own announcement.”

Some Republicans have speculated that Mondello could be ousted before his term expires next year and replaced by Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-Clarence, Erie County. But sources have said that Reynolds isn’t interested.

There’s also the talk that former New York City Mayor Rudy Guiliani may try to co-op the party and install one of his operatives as chairman.

But Mondello dismissed the speculation and said he’ll serve as long as the party wants him to.
