Closing Time For Caffeinated Alcohol

June
26

Anheuser-Busch agreed today to stop selling caffeinated alcohol beverages after an investigation by New York and other states showed the company was illegally marketing the drinks to young people. titl.jpg

The agreement reached by Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and other attorneys general calls for Anheuser-Busch to no longer produce caffeinated “Tilt,” “Bud Extra,” or other alcoholic energy drinks.

The investigation contended that the St. Louis-based brewer was making false or misleading statements about the health and energizing effects of Tilt and Bud Extra. They also claim that advertisements were directed to underage drinkers to promote the drinks as energy drinks rather than alcoholic beverages.

The agreement calls for Anheuser-Busch to no longer produce caffeinated alcoholic energy drinks nationwide. The company will also pay $200,000 to be distributed among the participating states to cover costs of the investigation and to be used for public programs.

Anheuser-Busch had no immediate comment, but the websites for some of the drinks were already down this morning.

In addition to New York, Arizona, California, Connecticut, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, New Mexico and Ohio were involved in the investigation.
