I thought I would try to help this discussion with just a few facts:

We spend as a nation more than almost any country in the world on health (including Western Europe).

The World Health Organization (2006 I think) rated our overall health at 37 out of 191 countries.

Universal health care does NOT mean free health care. It does NOT mean no choice of coverage. In Europe, each person pays an amount for health insurance and can choose between different plans. The two major differences are that they HAVE to have a plan and if they cannot afford one, they will be provided for. It is not so different from our own country, except that HMOs are not running it.

Anyway, I am a volunteer EMT who is uninsured. I make too much for Medicaid and my employer does not offer insurance. I'm not alone. I think that even those of you who see universal health care as bad should recognize that people who work hard should have ACCESS to health care. Please, as a NY volunteer EMT, check your facts before you jump to conclusions about universal health care. Thank You!!

matt..it probably depends on how national health care
is structured....rather than the concept itself....
most doctors do not want to give up income they
are used to and believe any national health care
program would in effect be socialism....however
a national health care guarantee might not
be if designed properly

Did you see the Bunk study stating 2/3 of doctors in America want National Health Care. The doctors who did this study also conducted one in 2002 and found that the majority of doctors did not want national health care, the problem with this is that the 2 question surveys drastically differ in there 2nd question. I found this article, 60% of Physicians Surveyed Oppose Switching to a National Health Care Plan, It's worth a read.

Grease him. On a serious note, it's pretty embarrassing how this jumbled, uber-expensive health care "system" in this country works.

I have a couple of friends in Nova Scotia, they don't have any complaints about their healthcare.

I have one, though- When I get the flu, or a nasty stomach bug, why is it that my Primary Care Physician can never make an appointment for me in less than two weeks time?

Jacob, Tim, Barbara and Sara:
Your enthusiasm for the US "system" of Health Care is so unusual that I'm very curious to know what kind of health care arrangement each of YOU has.

Barbara is right-on, too.

Ask our Canadian brethren (and sistren) how they feel going to a doctor.

There's a reason all these people want to come to our United States: health care is readily available to all (except those who choose Kings County Hosp)-- and someone else will pay for it. I guess that's two reasons.

I wouldn't want to have even a cold in Canada. Forget something catastrophic.

Great...now we can wait for 6 months to have a necessary surgical procedure like they do in Europe.

Right on, Jacob!

There are a lot of unfit, overweight, unhealthy people who live here in New York whose weak dependency on others (and our government, which is you and me) leads them, and radical groups, to protest for "health care" for themselves and for people who are not at all interested in their own health.

I can't see our overweight junior US Senator leading any "health care" protests so long as she is as obese as she is. And as to these other unhealthy people: let nature take its course. We have no obligation as a taxpaying society to save their lives-- if they do not wish to save their own lives first.
