Bruno Gives Another Hint That He’s Packing It In

Former Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, R-Brunswick, Rensselaer County, gave another signal today that he’s likely to retire before his term expires at year’s end.

Two weeks it became clear that Bruno wouldn’t finish his term as he also exited as majority leader, but he’s been talking more definitely in recent days about leaving office sooner rather than later.

If he steps down early, “There’ll be a vacancy until Assemblyman Roy McDonald gets elected in this district,” Bruno said during a press conference, according to the Albany Times Union.

Bruno said last week on Fred Dicker’s radio show that he would like to step down in order to avoid any confusion over the Senate’s power structure between he and new Majority Leader Dean Skelos.

If Bruno resigns, it would leave the Republicans with a 31-30 majority, but Republican aides said the slim majority is meaningless because lawmakers aren’t expected back this year. And if they did return, say to approve a property-tax cap, Senate Democrats would also be on board.

Still, some aides said a Bruno resignation could come any day—and again they insist it has nothing to do with his legal troubles.

Probably be gone by the time Saratoga racetrack opens – Although, as in previous years, he might continue enjoying the place beaucoup while still collecting the state dough and perks. And, they’re off!

Dear Joe—Are the Feds closing in? Say it ain’t so, Joe! Say it ain’t so! Meantime, don’t let the door hit you in the butt on your way out.
