Upstate Dem On The Air

Democratic congressional candidate Dan Maffei has his first television ad going up today in the 25th District, which runs from Syracuse to the Rochester suburbs. Maffei, according to Democratic and Republican operatives, is now believed to be the favorite in the race to replace retiring Rep. Jim Walsh, who Maffei narrowly lost to in 2006.

Maffei says he has raised more than $1.3 million since he restarted his campaign last year and has an impressive $950,000 on hand—almost as much as Maffei spent in 2006.

The official campaign filings won’t come out until next week. Maffei’s Republican opponent is Dale Sweetland, a former Onondaga County legislator.

The ad is a pretty generic, get-to-know-you piece. The ad is running in the Rochester and Syracuse markets, with an ad buy of about $70,000 this week.

Aides said they may spend up to $300,000 on air space with the ad and expect to be up with ads through the election.
