A new strategy memo on the presidential campaign released today by Democracy Corps and the polling firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner finds that Republican John McCain beats Democrat Barack Obama when the economic debate is positive, but Obama wins when it’s negative.
What does that mean?
The McCain narrative wins by 50 percent to 45 percent when voters consider his proposals for “tax cuts for the middle class and businesses, simplification of the tax code, support for free trade, and a vow to ‘root out government waste and pork-barrel spending in Washington.’‘’ compared to “Obama narrative that discussed tax cuts for the middle class, a rejection of tax cuts for big corporations, and that promoted the renegotiation of free trade agreements and investment in education and alternative fuel sources.’’
That’s the positive debate.
However, Democracy Corps found, “By a 49 to 40 percent margin voters side with the Obama narrative that accuses McCain of continuing Bush’s policies of favoring the rich, spending billions in Iraq and cutting spending for education, student loans and transportation when compared to McCain’s argument that Obama will increase taxes and spending and eliminate free trade agreements.’’
Democracy Corps was founded in 1999 by James Carville and Stanley Greenberg, both key advisers to former President Bill Clinton.
Overall, their survey of 2,000 voters found Obama leading McCain nationally 49 percent to 45 percent.
